iM Feature: Gabes EF Hatch

A blast from the past, here is the very first car I featured for Illmotion a few years ago, and ever since then I have wanted to re-shoot, and re-write a feature article as the car has progressed. Gabes build quality is truly extraordinary, and the best part is 95% of the build took place in his own shop. Known to many Nanaimoites as the man to go to for work on their cars. Gabe has progressed not only with his car over the last 5 years of ownership, but also with the tools, shop, and resources to build/work on some amazing cars. While Gabes phasing out of this beautiful EF hatch, he plans to put it on the market in the next few weeks. It leaves myself and others to imagine what he has in store for us next.

While the exterior of the car has not changed since the last feature, the motor has been the primary subject of change. Previous the car featured a log manifold with a Garret T3 turbo, 38mm Tial Wastegate, and a stock valve train. Gabe has taken the time to build the head with mainly Crower parts, mean while he also upgraded the turbo manifold to a Blueridge Motor Sport Top-mount to accommodate the new Precision 6262 turbo.

iM Feature: Tim’s 1992 Honda Civic EG Hatchback

Functionality.

If there’s anything that all car enthusiasts can appreciate and respect, it’s a car that is built with pure function in mind. Now, not to take away from current craze of stance and aggressive fitment; which is a movement that continues to grow and get better and better with time, there’s something refreshing about owners who build their cars based on true performance and functionality.

A perfect example of a functional build is Tim’s 1993 Honda Civic EG Hatchback.

Before acquiring this vehicle, this little EG was blessed with a K20A2 swap by it’s previous owner. Working with what the car already had, Tim worked with the K20A2 transplant, ultimately giving this EG new life by adding a Comptech Supercharger with an upgraded pulley. A look under the hood though, and one will find more than just a Supercharged K20 swapped into this EG hatch. Tim’s attention to detail is unparalleled as the engine bay sports numerous Mugen Bolts, Hasport K-Swap motor mounts, a JDM Type-R Valve Cover, and various goodies from Spoon Sports such as the Carbon Kevlar Spark Plug Cover, Oil Cap, and Radiator Cap. As Tim wanted to keep this car on the quiet side without sacrificing performance, a Fujitsubo RMO1A exhaust and R-Crew Race Header prevent this EG from drawing unwanted attention during daily drives.

To support what, undeniably, is a little engine bay jam packed with nothing but pure performance, Tim’s consistency is unmatched as the suspension and chassis components on this vehicle definitely stay on point. For a taste of what exactly keeps this EG planted to the road, Tim enlisted a set of T1R B-Max Coilovers, a Carbing 3-Point Strut Tower Bar, M-Factory Roll Center Adjusters, a Comptech Engineerin Rear Subframe Brace, and ITR front and rear sway bars, just to name a few, to ensure maximum contact to the pavement.

As if that wasn’t enough, Tim continues his onslaught of function with a JDM ITR 5-Lug conversion sporting a mint set of 16″ Spoon SW388s with Rays Lug Nuts. To bring this Supercharged K20 EG to a complete stop, Brembo CAD Plated drilled Rotors and Spoon Sports Twin Block Calipers are more than up to the task.

With the desire to keep this EG looking subtle when out on the town, a look at the exterior of this EG and to the ordinary eye one will definitely see a simple and clean looking Honda. However as mentioned before, Tim’s impeccable attention to detail goes a long way as Honda heads will take note of the Spoon Sports Duckbill Rear Wing, the JDM EG6 amber side markers, fog lights, thin side moldings, and even go as far as pointing out the Spoon Sports Wiper Blades. A Wings West RS front lip and Type-R style rear lip are nicely fitted to the front and rear bumpers of this EG, without a doubt giving it a little eye appeal as well.

As functional as this EG is inside and out, what gives this EG a little more sass compared to others out there, is once again, the little details that make such a huge difference with the overall delivery of this vehicle. Leading by example is the JDM EG6 power folding mirrors set up that was put into this Civic. An in-depth look at the interior of this vehicle and one will find tons of JDM EG6 features that were never available (or only available as options) when the EG was introduced to North America such as JDM EG6 clock, OEM power window conversion, JDM EG6 Center Console and even a JDM EG6 Armrest. Aside from the JDM goodies featured inside this EG, Tim drives comfortably in a Spoon Sports Street Bucket Seat (found in the driver and passenger seat) and a Spoon Sports Steering wheel. A custom JDM ITR Rear Bench also sits in the back of Tim’s EG, to once again point out Tim’s incredible attention to detail.

Presenting all enthusiasts with an EG that people can love or hate, one cannot deny Tim’s pursuit of function and all the details that Tim put into his EG to make it one of the most amazing builds we’ve had the pleasure of sharing here with all of you. With today’s car culture continuing to grow, one can conclude that performance and functionality is not going anywhere and will always be an integral part of this scene. While stance and aggressive fitment is all the craze these days, we definitely gotta give praise and show some love and appreciation to the ones who are out here, trying to function.

iM Event Coverage: Weekly 403 Honda/Beyond.ca Meet – July…

A few of us made it out to the Beyond.ca weekly meet at chinook this week and it was a pretty decent turn out so I had to grab the camera and snap a few pics.

If you feel like attending, these are held every Wednesday if the weather is decent at the top rear parkade of Chinook Centre/Mall.

There is something we do need to mention. There were a few dangerous incidents that happened last night by others. We all have the urge to do stuff like burnouts, drifts and stuff like that after meets and such, but just as a reminder, the Beyond.ca meets have been held there at Chinook for years now on Wednesday evenings, with the security at the mall for the most part letting us hang out there as long as we behave. Incidents like this will weaken the relationship between security and us fellow car lovers, and they may not allow us to meet there anymore if incidents like this continue. Please help us by refraining from burnouts, speeding up the ramp, drifting, leaving garbage around. This in turn will make sure we continue to have a place to go on Wednesdays.

iM Feature: Ger & Yau’s Acura CSX

If you recall last summer we featured a crazy 350z from Toronto (link here). Well Ger is back, this time with his brother and they’re proud to showcase their crazy ‘daily driver’ JDM converted CSX. But make no mistake this is no beater style daily driver which most us would associate with that term. It’s actually a pretty crazy top to bottom JDM inspired build.

Ger and Yau are rocking legit JDM FD2 bumpers, fenders and lights all around the car and as if that wasn’t enough they slapped on a plethora of Mugen parts (most likely shipped overnight from Japan) to stand out even more. To keep up in all the daily traffic the brothers added HONDATA Flash Pro, Skunk2 Cams and Header and an extremely baller 70R J’s Racing titanium exhaust system. Moving to the interior, Bride Low Max seats, Defi gauges and ARC shift knob round out the cabin comforts. The car is rolling on an aggressive set of 18×9.5/8.5 +15/+35 RPF1’s and what daily drive doesn’t need a set of Endless 6pot brakes!

Thanks goes out to our Toronto buddy Galen Wan for the pics! Enjoy.

iM Feature: Duncan Yu’s 1995 Honda Civic DX

With stance and wheel fitment being the biggest craze in the car scene right now, coming across cars built with performance being the main focus is pretty hard to come by these days. This is rightfully so, as cars with pretty impressive power can be bought from a car dealership leaving the owner with nothing left to modify except the suspension and wheels if he/she wishes to do so. No matter what people do to their own vehicles, modding them can turn into quite the addiction.

In Duncan Yu’s case with his 1995 Honda Civic DX, power and speed were the key elements spawning his car addiction. Originally purchased in 2003, Duncan worked with what the car already had and turbo charged the stock D15 motor. After a dyno and run at the track, the turbo D15 made 150hp at the wheels and ran a respectable 14.8 seconds at 96mph. Jump to two years later, Duncan swapped the turbo D15 and opted for a Turbo LS swap pulling off 12.7 seconds at 110mph, and 280hp at the wheels. With amazing power coming out his Civic, it’s no wonder he was dubbed the “STI killer” on the local forum, Beyond.ca.

In 2007, Duncan felt it was time to part ways with the car, and sold it with the stock GSR motor. The story does not end here however.

In 2010, Duncan found himself reunited with the “STI Killer” and decided to buy it back in the same condition it was in when he sold it. Forward to the present, Duncan blew the stock GSR motor and what came back to haunt him was the pursuit of speed and power that he initially craved for. With the assistance of his friend Jessy R., Duncan swapped the blown GSR motor for a turbo charged B18C1. With dyno tuning performed by Toma K., the built B18C1 motor put down 400hp at the wheels and even got to see some quarter mile action running a very impressive 12.2 seconds at 123mph.

Due to the recent loss of Race City in Calgary, Duncan has not been able to see what his Civic can pull off on the quarter mile as he recently put in a new clutch and is now sitting at a whopping 472hp at the wheels. That’s right, 472whp coming from a 1995 Honda Civic DX; no typos here.

With what is probably one of the most unassuming vehicles roaming the streets of Calgary, calling Duncan’s Honda Civic a “Sleeper” is definitely an understatement. In a current state where it seems like it’s all about wheels and fitment, Duncan breaks this mold and literally leaves everyone else in the dust with his boosted B18C1 Honda Civic build. Try and keep up.

iM Flashback: Driven 2010 Recap

With Driven 2012 coming up quickly, we thought it’d be a good idea to look back and see what everyone had to offer in 2010 and what we can look forward to for this year. Since Driven was skipped for us in 2011 – there has been a significant amount of time for everybody to get their whips refreshed. From new cars, to new parts, complete overhauls or tweaks to an already existing minty car, we think this will be the best Driven yet. We have a handful of fresh new faces joining us this year and it’s only a matter of time before we all gather at the Olympic Oval once again.

Looking back – many cars are now gone and have been passed on to new owners and some remain alive and well and will be joining us once again. Let’s take a look…

Dal’s K20 Type R – this was a long-time build for Dal and it was pristine. Reggie now has possession of it and stripped it apart with new plans. From what I’ve seen, he’s doing a great job and going from the ground up with new parts left right and center. It should be at the show this year, so look forward to that!

Alan’s JDM conversion CSX Type-S. So clean and one of the first (and probably still only) to do the conversion with legit OEM parts and tastefully IMO. This is out of his possession now.

Jackie’s infamous S2000. Jackie has some plans for the upcoming year and he won’t be showing in Driven, but he’ll be coming out for our show & shine with new toys to boot.

Hoang’s K20 Civic. One of the most unique and cleanest builds I got to see in 2010. Everything from the J’s wing to the custom splitter and canards and his I.C.E. set up. Not to mention the K20 under the hood.

Steve Poyntz’s 2JZ swap Cressida on 350Z wheels. Super simple and clean build with a whole lotta power.

Chris’s Triumph TR7. Funny story with Chris and his placement in our booth. We had just finished setting everyone up and cleaning our cars and we were just about to leave the place when we were told that there was one more guy in our group. None of us knew of anyone extra and we had placed everyone on our list. We agreed to see the car and the first thing we said was “fuck yeah, we’ll take it”. Chris and his triumph are one of his kind – nothing you’d ever really see on the streets and it’s powered by an SR20. Definitely a keeper.

JC’s Corolla. This is also going through a nice change for 2012 and I’m looking forward to see it. It’s gone from simple and conservative to… well… you’ll have to see. :)

Jamie’s S2000 – this thing is beat on the track like no tomorrow. Jamie drives it hard and rightfully so. He had got his wheels powdercoated that day or the day before the show too so they were clean as hell.

Punit’s Integra. I remember this was the year that he did the K24 swap and it took weeks on end to get it done. One problem would come up after another and the show came up super quick. Luckily he got it running and entered. Wait till you guys see what he has in store this year.

Gopesh’s GTI – this is also going through a nice overhaul for this year as well.

Terence Wah’s S2000. Another S2000 that saw the track often and built with function in mind. Also another that is no longer in Terence’s possession. He now has a new toy…

Derrek Poyntz’s recently finished Integra RS. This was finished hours before roll-in and ready to go. All the graffiti on this was done by hand! The Calgary skyline is also on the valve cover.

Terence Ng’s Merc. More plans for this later on as well…

iM Feature: Scott Hillis’s 2008 Honda Civic Si

These days, the world wide web plays a very influential role in the way a car is modified by their owners. With forums and such resources found online, one is bound to find some sort of inspiration for his or her’s project car. With this sharing of wonderful photography, advice and knowledge over the internet however, opinions can certainly play a part for all the wrong reasons; negativity and hate begin to step into the limelight.

So what does one do to break out of the vicious circle that happens on the internet? The answer is simple: Do your own research and just do what you think feels right. Do you and ignore the negative noise.

Doing exactly what was just mentioned, it’s no wonder that Scott Hillis’s boosted 2008 Honda Civic Si catches the attention of anyone who lays their eyes on it, whether it be on the track or simply parked on the street corner.

Looking to build his Si as a complete package with performance, function and an overall visual that kills, Scott looked to like J’s Racing, T1R, Greddy, Advan, and Spoon (to name a few) to be the working parts of his Honda Civic.

Looking at the exterior, what stands out on Scott’s Si from other 8th Gens out there is definitely the J’s Racing GT Wing, Type-R side skirts and J’s Racing front lip. If that wasn’t enough, Scott’s Si sits properly stanced on an aggressive set of 18×9 Advan RS wheels. A look behind the spokes of the Advans and one will find a Big Brake Kit from T1R whenever this vehicle needs to be brought to a sudden stop.

The interior stays subtle yet effective with a pair of T1R reclinable seats, a Nardi steering wheel, Mugen Pedals, and a JVC Head Unit.

When it comes to body reinforcement and suspension, Scott fully understands the movements of his vehicle and sentences these movements to prison with front and rear strut tower bars, front and rear lower arm bars, a floor bar, seat bars, and a monocoque bar; all courtesy of J’s Racing. With J’s Racing suspension goodies for days, the Tein Super Street Coilovers seem like they pretty much sit low and let the driver just enjoy the ride.

Just when it seems as though this Si seems complete and fully capable of conquering the track, Scott takes it a step further and enhances the Si’s already impressive, out of the factory spunk with a Greddy Turbo and a Hondata Flashpro tune. A T1R test pipe, T1R 70mm catback and J’s Racing Titainum FX 60R Exhaust give Scott’s Si a little more room to breathe when necessary.

By doing his own research and just doing what he felt was the right thing to do, Scott’s Boosted Si is definitely one that keeps anyone on the internet talking whether it be because of the car’s performance, function, or neck snapping looks.

Even if the comments of others on the internet were negative, none of it seemed to stop Scott from building what really is “the total package”…

…and it shouldn’t stop you from doing what you want to accomplish with your project or build either. Just do you!

Until next time lovers and friends!

iM Feature: Hoang Nguyen’s 2000 Honda Civic SiR

The Honda Civic.

Without a doubt one of the most popular cars modified by car enthusiasts all over the world. What probably makes the Civic so popular is it’s appeal to the youth and it’s functionality, but more importantly it’s reliability.

As the Civic gained more and more popularity over the years, the more and more the aftermarket paid attention. Long story short, the Civic had so much aftermarket support that it started getting some negative attention with some of the parts that were applied by their owners.

Non-functional parts became the cancer for many modified Civics out there. It became such a ridiculous phase that some vehicles looked like they were not made from this planet and some even looked like they were ready to blast off into the atmosphere.

Forward to the present, and yes such Civics still exist. But thanks to an era where cleanliness matters, one Civic rises above all the ridicule and comes out getting the last laugh…

Enter Hoang Nguyen’s 2000 Honda Civic SiR.

Inside and out, Hoang’s SiR displays nothing but cleanliness and functionality. With Carbon Fiber flowing throughout the exterior of the car, authentic Mugen MF10s giving the car an aggressive stance, and a J’s Racing carbon wing, the rest of this SiR just has you wanting more.

Ask and you shall receive as under the hood, Hoang’s Civic ditches the stock SiR engine and is currently rocking a K20Z motor. Attention to detail follows as Mugen bolts and Baller Bolts are showcased throughout the engine bay.

Continuing on with attention to detail, Hoang’s SiR keeps it going “HAM” with suspension upgrades that make any other Civic feel completely irrelevant. Rocking Tein Flex coilovers with EDFC and chassis bars for days, this is one SIR that is strictly business when it comes to handling and balance.

The interior of Hoang’s Civic is just as crazy as the rest of the car with a pair of Bride Vios seats, and EK9 Type-R interior pieces that are in the most immaculate condition. The In Car Electronics and Audio are enough to make you wanna go on a permanent road trip.

With such a pristine Civic jam packed with functional mods and upgrades, we gotta give it up to people like Hoang who know exactly what this scene is all about.

Through all the phases and generations of the Civic, Hoang takes the best of every era and his SiR Coupe showcases that. In an era where functionality and cleanliness is everything nowadays, Hoang’s SiR steps up to the plate, and raises the bar for us all.
