iM Feature: Nick Chow’s Honda S2000

snaps//jason.hoang
words//jc.tenchavez

Finally from our “Ultra Shoot” a couple weeks back we have 2010’s “Geeked Up” edition of Nick Chow’s infamous J’s Racing S2000.

Sporting a fresh set of Jordan 11s (White Volk TE37s) Nick continues to set the bar for those in our local scene.

This S2000 has yet to be put in its natural element at the track. But with new fitment and updated stopping power it will definitely be interesting to see how well Nick’s S2K attacks the road course this season.

I must also note that most shots of this whip were taken in a cemetery. Definitely something out of the ordinary for the illmotion photogs at hand that night (Jason & Aldrich), nontheless very suitable for a vehicle that lays the competition to rest.

With such a peaceful ambiance and the radiance of Chowfun’s “Bot”, the outcome of the shoot was…well, have a look for yourself.

Adil Kurji’s 1958 MGA

I’ve thought about this for a while now and from what I’ve seen, I think everyone deserves to see something special today.

Now, I’m not saying the cars featured before aren’t; so far, we have been blessed with cars exquisitely personalized, slammed to their hearts content, and can hit mind-boggling speeds.

This car is neither of those; it has been kept stock and on paper, it’s not considered ‘fast’ in today’s standards. If you want ‘fast’, check out Ryan’s MR2 or this GT3.

Despite all this, there’s just something about it that just made me… Speechless.

If you do not enjoy this car, then you’re not a true petrolhead. I will take that quote with me to the grave.

I present to you the 1958 MG MGA. It is the type of car that started the roadster niche and spawned to create the booming British automobile history consisting the likes of Triumph, Lotus, Austin Healey, etc. The roadster can also be held responsible for the inception of the Mazda Miata.

This 1958 MGA only had 3 owners in its lifespan. The second owner had it since 1967 till my friend, Adil Kurji, took it off his hands in late 2009.

When I first saw her, I was flabbergasted; here was a car as old as my dad and it still looks immaculate. I’m sure that if she could talk, she would tell me countless stories. For one, this car has seen majority of Canada as the second owner drove it from Ontario to Calgary after graduating in high school.

Exterior wise, it’s absolutely pretty. It has soft curves which hugs your line of view and its small ride height shows what ‘slammed’ is before ‘slammed’ was cool. It warms your heart with every glance.

Granted, it has battle scars of yesteryear accumulated throughout its lifetime; the right quarter panel has scratches from the second owner crashing through barbed wire while autocrossing backwards. Blindfolded. True story.

Now this is not the twin cam version which apparently destroys itself from the inside out. This is the 1489cc engine, which is enough to move this lightweight around corners but will struggle in the highway, especially with its 4 speed manual tranny. This is a cruiser, meant to enjoy the sun and to appreciate how lucky you are to drive this special gem.

When Adil took me out for a test drive, it was a special moment for me; for the first time in my life I was in car, grinning from ear to ear, giggling like a schoolgirl.

The moment I heard that rumble, goosebumps just went all over my body. It was pure heaven. If I punched a bear square in the face and lived to tell about it, it’s half of what I felt that night. Now I know how those rally drivers felt back then. Driving around downtown was a thrill of its own as I enjoyed the endless skies with the roof down. The radio was barely audible through its mono speaker as I became one with the car.

Now this MGA is not practical as it has limited space for another person and maybe, weekend luggage in the trunk. Whatever.

If you wanted to be sensible, you would have bought a normal car. End of story. People buy these roadsters because they are eccentric and fun.

It didn’t matter that the fuel gauge twitches when you hit the throttle down; you didn’t care that to use the speedometer, you had to take the average out between the highest and the lowest recorded speed because it floated. Hell, you wouldn’t even notice that it was in mph.

All these quirks, things that quintessentially defines British automobiles, is what made people fall in love with it.

Now the MGA is not the quickest nor the most agile car around. The faster version hates itself and this MGA also has worn out weather stripping so it leaks when it rains.

And I wouldn’t care. I would buy one of these in a heartbeat and smile at the sunset forever.

Questions, comments? I’d like to hear from you. Yes, you!

iM: Speedtech August Trackday Pt. II

Some overdue shots from last weeks’ track day at Race City. This is just in additon to Ryan’s contribution a few posts back…
Nice cars, the weather held out for us most of the day, although it did rain for about an hour which did allow us to set up a chicane on the first straight to change the course up a bit. The sun came out and dried up the pavement near the afternoon and everyone was back out in full force.

I tried my best to get pics of everyone’s cars while I was off the track. Sorry for those that I missed!

Driven 2010

iM: Driven Edmonton 2010

Just some quick coverage of last weekends Driven show in Edmonton. Despite it being an extremely long day, and having to navigate the Chuck’s shit roads (WTF! is everything under construction in Edmonton?) it ended up being an all right day. The show was significantly smaller then the Calgary edition but the quality of cars made up for the quanitity.

Anyways check the pics:

Started the drive bright and early, on the road at 6:30am…. what were we thinking haha.

Hit up the car wash, then waited for Punit to clean his wheels.

Finally there…. lots of tight Supra’s in attendance.

NSX with updated front end conversion.

Sick Datsun that has been at previous DTP show, so nice.

Customed out Mini

Clean MR2 rocking some dished Work XD9’s.

Type-R conversion FD civic

ChargeSpeed EK hatch that has been in hibernation for some time.

EK rocking some sick Mugen MF10’s

And finally a couple quick snaps of the illmotion whips

Beyond.ca

iM: Beyond.ca "Super Meat" 2010

The Beyond.ca annual super meet took place last Wednesday at Chinnok Centre. The super meet started when Aldrich felt that the meets weren’t the same as the ones held years ago.

With less than 20 cars showing up weekly he decided to call out all the “OG” members.

With the first super meet being a great success, this continues to be a yearly meet with everyone coming out.

This year was no exception with probably the biggest turn out yet. Almost filling up the entire upper level parking lot.

Here’s a few picture’s from the big meet.

Hopefully the meets don’t die down this year and stay alive.

See you all out there!

ASM

iM Feature: Jackson Chen’s Honda S2000

Along with Ryan’s MR2, we were also given the honor of shooting Jackson’s “Doin’ ASM Everything” S2000.

Many of you have probably read about this car in Honda Tuning, and being that it is a local car, it’s only proper we feature it the right way here on illmotion!

Inspired by the ASM Race Demo S2000 (as well as fellow S2K homie Nick Chow’s J’s Racing S2000), Jackson’s “RICEPOT” is definitely one of those Hondas you cannot ignore if you ever come across it.

With it’s Grand Prix White exterior, red interior, freshly fitted Bronze Volk RE-30s, and of course it’s roaring ITBs, this is one S2000 that will simply leave you speechless.

I guess we can call this Part 2 from our “Ultra Shoot” ha ha!

On to the pics…
