iM Feature

iM Feature: Danny Yee’s 2008 Subaru Impreza WRX STI

As you get older and the thought of “real life” begins to set in, you may start to notice a change in interests as you “outgrow” certain hobbies and start to change daily activities in order to adapt and live for the future. Eventually, your taste in cars will broaden as you look for something a little more functional and practical to suit your everyday life, and look for a vehicle that will tackle the “real life” situations that are thrown in your direction.

For those with a love and passion for cars and the car modding life however, a few questions begin to surface as well. Questions like ‘how can one maintain this passion for car modding when “Life” happens?’, ‘Is it possible to balance “real life” and “car life”?’, and even a question as extreme as ‘Can someone really be finally done with cars?’

The answer to these questions like these are quite simple in the sense that, well, it’s entirely up to you. For Danny Yee and his 2008 Subaru Impreza WRX STI, the answers to these questions are very clear.

“Subtle and Very Unassuming.”

Without a doubt, this is arguably the first and final thought that comes to mind should anyone cross paths with this STI. In search of building a vehicle that will outperform others in it’s class, yet maintain full functionality, it’s no wonder Danny chose the STI as his latest platform. Danny, who is no stranger to creating the perfect blend of simple and aggressive, comes correct with what just may be the perfect combination of style and performance, all the whilst maintaining a practical and fully functional daily driver.

A look at the exterior of this STI and the first thing that is immediately noticed is it’s aggressive stance thanks to the KW V3 coilovers and the 18×10 Volk TE37 Super Laps wrapped in 255/35R18 Toyo T1S rubber on all four corners. What makes this car stand out exterior wise though, is the Chargespeed “Bottomline” aero kit. Such a subtle aero kit, but as Danny puts it “it’s just perfect for the car and it’s exactly what I wanted.”

Since this STI is Danny’s every day road warrior, the interior of this STI stays true to Subaru’s original equipment, with a few goodies to boot, such as an ARC Shift Knob, a Defi Boost Gauge and an Innovate Wideband O2 Kit. For a little in car entertainment, Danny added an Alpine DVD Unit paired with Alpine Type-R components.

Because Danny wanted to go for something so subtle and very unassuming, Subaru’s distinct “boxer rumble” inevitably had to go. Danny’s solution to this was a Tomei Expreme Equal Length Manifold, an HKS Down Pipe and a Fujitsubo exhaust. Add COBB’s Access Port and a tune (performed by Sunny of Airboy Tuning) and what is the outcome? An impressive 285whp/375 ft.lbs of torque. Women lie, men lie, numbers don’t lie. With amazing numbers put on the dyno, and the “boxer rumble” delete, the only thing practically heard when this car is on the streets is the HKS Super Sequential Blow-Off Valve.

With what is in our opinion, probably one of the most well thought, stylish and functional, and of course subtle and very unassuming Subarus out there right now, it’s safe to say that there are definitely some positive answers that can come from the previous questions stated above. The answers to these questions are certainly reflected in Danny’s Chargespeed STI in the sense that nothing is impossible and you may not even have to change a single thing to live the life that you want.

In order to achieve that perfect balance of “real life” and “car life”, the solution is quite simple: Life is what you make of it, and just do whatever makes you happy. Keep this in mind, and these two aspects will be exactly what they are: a part of growing up in the game they call “Life”.

iM Event Coverage: Weekly 403 Honda/Beyond.ca Meet – July…

A few of us made it out to the Beyond.ca weekly meet at chinook this week and it was a pretty decent turn out so I had to grab the camera and snap a few pics.

If you feel like attending, these are held every Wednesday if the weather is decent at the top rear parkade of Chinook Centre/Mall.

There is something we do need to mention. There were a few dangerous incidents that happened last night by others. We all have the urge to do stuff like burnouts, drifts and stuff like that after meets and such, but just as a reminder, the Beyond.ca meets have been held there at Chinook for years now on Wednesday evenings, with the security at the mall for the most part letting us hang out there as long as we behave. Incidents like this will weaken the relationship between security and us fellow car lovers, and they may not allow us to meet there anymore if incidents like this continue. Please help us by refraining from burnouts, speeding up the ramp, drifting, leaving garbage around. This in turn will make sure we continue to have a place to go on Wednesdays.

iM Event Coverage: Luxury / Exotic Cruise For a…

This past weekend we attended the 2nd Annual Luxury / Exotic Cruise For a Cause set up by local realtor Jordan Lotoski. About 30 cars came out and raised nearly $2500 for the Kelm family who has 3 children all who are affected by Fragile X Syndrome. After a quick meet in the morning at Distinctive Collection the cruise began, and as you can imagine with this group of cars it turned lots of heads as we cruised out to Banff Springs Hotel for brunch. This was a great event to take part in and thanks to everyone efforts in organizing it, can’t wait for next year.

Acura

iM Highlight: Vince’s CSX

We are pleased to present another GAWA feature out of Toronto and this time we have Vince’s daily driven commuter car, a 2006 Acura CSX Premium.

Vince has a bunch of experience modding cars, as he started the day he got his license and hasn’t stopped since. First up was a brand new 2000 Civic DX hatchback fresh off the lot which didn’t last long before he decided to switch it up for a less expensive 1992 Civic Si hatchback. Once he got bored of that he upgraded to a 4 door 1994 Integra which immediately received a JDM front end and other appropriate mods. In 2005 he again decided to switch it up this time for a Del Sol that a buddy was selling and after taking possession Vince went crazy. Full tear down, K swapped, resprayed, nothing left untouched. He even landed a feature in Modified Magazine for his efforts on this build.

At this point Vince felt it was time to move on to something else so he upgraded to a 2002 IS300 which was once again torn apart and rebuilt bolt by bolt. Vertex everything, 19″ Advan Sienna wheels, shaved and tucked bay and full car respray. However this time he just wasn’t feeling it and due to some life changes he needed something that he could commute with (5000+ km’s/month!) so obviously a fully built IS wasn’t ideal.

Bye bye IS and hello commuter car #1. A stock RSX which he proceeded to put 80,000 km’s on in one years time. Feeling like he needed more space than the RSX could offer he upgraded again (you get the drift by now haha, Vince likes to switch cars) to the CSX you see here.

Not able to leave the CSX stock Vince has upgrade the exterior with CTR bumpers, Mugen window visors and CSL stye rear wing. He also has a small collection of wheels (Mugen MF10’s, SSR Type F’s and stock CTR wheels) that he changes up on occasion.

The engine bay and interior sport a bunch of JDM CTR or CSX-S parts, but Vince has not compromised the daily driver commuter use he so desperately needs. The CSX odometer is already blown past 320,000 km’s and Vince says he can’t wait to roll over 500,000 km’s!

iM Highlight

iM Highlight: Steve’s GS350

Coming at you again with another sick photo set from the homie Galen Wan (aka GAWA photo) featuring Steve’s Lexus GS350. With luxury vehicles becoming more and more of a popular platform for modding cars, sometimes you just gotta ask yourself what else can you really add to something that’s already so well equipped?

In Steve’s case, keeping it simple is key as an INGS+1 style lip kit, a full matte metallic dary grey vinyl wrapping, a set of BC Racing coilovers to get this car low, and an aggressive set of 20″ ADV.1 ADV08TS wheels were added to set off his GS350.

‘They say’ the set of wheels you choose for your car, can either make or break the appearance of your vehicle. A quick look at Steve’s GS, and it’s definitely safe to say that the ADV.1s he chose definitely made his car stand out from the rest. Have a look for yourself and you’ll see exactly what ‘they say’.

|Mod List:
BC Coilovers
INGS+1 Replica Lip Kit
ADV.1 ADV08TS wheels (20×9.5 & 20×10.5)
Matte Metallic Grey Wrapped

And a couple more rolling shots!
