iM Highlight: Alex’s Flared GC8

Every car has that one modification that’s necessary to make it mildly ‘cool’, the first thing you’d do to it before taking it out to a cars and coffee event. The GT86 needs larger wheels to fix the sunken-boat fitment, an S-Chassis needs coilovers and some sort of ‘JDM’ plush toy, and so on. But what about when EVERY one of that certain car has the same entry level mods? Cheap wheels and Canadian tire exhaust are common sight these days, so when someone steps outside the box and brings a new look to the table, it’s a welcome sight-

Such is the case with Alex Sparke’s 1995 Subaru WRX.

When dream meets daily driver, you often end up with a very eye-catching functional vehicle. Tucked under the Wide Works “Universal” 50mm fender flares, the 17 x 10 XXR 531s give this GC8 a much more aggressive stance than from factory, making the V6 STi spoiler look a little less ridiculous.

DSC_0711Living just up the road from Alex and seeing the car around town a lot, the car has transformed from just another GC8, to HIS car. Tasteful modifications to fit ones style are hard to find, especially with those of us fresh out of school and having minimal modification experience. At the time of this article some new additions have been made, one of the most notable (and probably controversial) being white LED puddle lights, yet another item that differentiates this WRX from the mass of others in the Edmonton area. DSC_0695H&R Trak spacers are behind the large offest, allowing the XXRs to fill the fenders in nicely, as well as Raceland coilovers and camber plates giving the right balance of function and “Moar Low”. DSC_0698

Much like the exterior, his interior has undergone some conservative modifications, such as the Nardi wheel and LikeWise Finger Banger shift ‘knob’

iM Highlight: Mini Mall Crawler

This mash-up of Pick-n-pull and Kijiji parts started out as a bone-stock, Grandma-spec 2000 Subaru Impreza Brighton wagon. (Not joking, bought from an 80 year old woman.) From there, it turned into a Father / Son project between my Dad and I, with him doing the research, and me helping at pick-n-pull, doing simple tasks or things that require child-sized hands.

The base idea was the Subaru-part-only lift.

Knowing that the Brighton was a base model bucket of simplicity, we were ecstatic that it did, in fact come with air conditioning. However, the sad, non-bolstered seats had to go, and were replaced with heated Forester seats as a bonus from pick-n-pull.

And in order to evade the fashion police for mismatched patterns, we modified some of the interior trim to fit the 50/50 rear folding seats out of the same Forester.

All the parts for the lift were taken from Pick-n-Pull, but a few parts were simply too sad on the scrap cars and had to be bought at the dealership, (Thanks Rally Subaru!) but none were aftermarket. This includes Forester struts, springs, and other Outback/WRX/Forester suspension goodies. All wheel disc brake conversion was a must.

Another must-have goodie for looking like an off-roader in ‘berta is a universal push bar. Add’s +5 HP and +5 Offroad points.  This was another awesome Kijiji find, for $50. Just had to lose the bottom portion of the bumper skin, and mod the mounts to bolt on. More function than form, but hey. Woulda’ jus’ look at it.

To accompany the larger wheels and tires, we ordered “Universal” rubber fender flares from Summit Racing, in order to avoid the pain of chipping and cracking fiberglass or carbon fiber flares.

The stock trim was falling off, so for ease of installation, we used external plastic clips instead of the stupidly painful Subaru clips, as well as gave the car a Monsta-liner second tone, to give it that “Outback” look, as well as protect it from rocks and hide some of the well-used-ness of the car.

The mechanical mod’s are mainly limited to suspension and steering (column had to be lengthened because of the engine lowering), and cosmetic mods are fairly simple and inexpensive. These include the V5 USDM front bumper from my silver RS being cut in half (I broke the bottom of it, oops), and clear JDM corners from Billy’s GF8 (rip Gwen),

as well as a Kijiji-bought Yakima Loadwarrior basket to hold the oversized spare tire and other goodies,

with a Yakima ski rack on top, to haul boards and skis to the hill with the bro-dudes.

Additional interior mods include a dash with a tach! Because the stock dash didn’t have one… It just had a nice Subaru logo to look at.

A JVC single-din unit with Bluetooth to keep the drive enjoyable, as I appear to have misplaced all my cassettes.

iM Highlight: Varty Brother’s Civic & Del Sol

Trying to expand our coverage of the car scene in Western Canada, the illmotion crew tries to get around to cities that are close by to check out what’s new in the car scene. This is how we first met the Varty brothers. After multiple trips up to Edmonton and the two of them appearing at shows in Calgary, we always seemed to run in to them snapping pictures and recording video, so right away we had similar interests.

iM Highlight: Sean’s EVO X STO Race Car

Now we normally stick to highly modified street cars that in some cases are also very capable track cars here at iM, in this case we have a STO prepped race car that is also street driveable. It’s normally only commuted to and from the track  but with a little convincing we managed to get the car out onto the streets for a few photos! Mandatory track snaps included of course!

iM Highlight: Shaun’s 1928 Ford Model A

The boys over at Hooptie Life Garage, particularly Shaun Harman (owner) have put together this awesome little Rat Rod with a ton of power and a pretty impressive build.  It took Shaun 9 months to build the car with guidance from his father, Tim. Including fabricating the frame himself and countless hours turning wrenches and busting knuckles.

The entire car was built from 100% stock into what you see hear today…..in a 2 car garage….in the middle of winter. Shaun had the car road legal on May 1st 2014 and decided the best way to break in his freshly built 86 year old car was with a 2000km round trip down to Sandpoint Idaho! We’re glad to report no issues at all, the car now has 2700km on it and is running perfectly.

Here’s a few features of what this killer Rat is armed with:

– 3″ channel over the frame

– Custom built frame by Shaun himself

– Triangulated 4 link in the rear on air suspension

– 4″drop tube solid axle in the front

iM Highlight: Aldo’s Honda S2000

When you acquire a new car and start a new project, there a lot of things people take into consideration before taking that dive into something new. Aftermarket support, performance and initial appearance/styling of the vehicle are just some of the things that people take into account before committing to the next “money pit”. After considering all the factors that are involved in acquiring a new project car, our good friend Aldo decided it was time to depart from Euro tuning and hop on the Honda wagon with this Grand Prix White AP1 Honda S2000.

Definitely still a project car in the making, we decided to take a few snaps of Aldo’s S2000 before it goes through more modifications over the course of the next few years. As long as Aldo does more modding to his car and a little less dancing while driving in his car (HAHA), we can’t wait to see what’s to come of this AP1! For now though, have a look of Aldo’s S2K in it’s premier stages.















iM Update: Ricky Luu’s Volkswagen GTI

The last time you saw Ricky’s GTI on illmotion, it was bagged sitting on CCWs and sported the original Volkswagen aero. Going through a load of “unseen” photos on our Flickr, we noticed that we never actually had a chance to show you guys what Ricky had done since the last time we featured his car.

With stock body Volkswagens and CCWs becoming quite the popular look amongst VW owners, Ricky knew it was time to do something a little different with his build, and by “a little different”, we actually mean he raised the bar to make his GTI so much more. What makes Ricky’s GTI stand out from others is undeniably his fusion of German Engineering and Japanese performance; the best of both worlds, if you will.

Stepping away from his CCWs, Ricky sought after Japanese wheel maker SSR, and fitted a set of Professor SP1s in SSR’s custom “Spectrum Silver” finish. To go along with the SSR wheels, Ricky continues his GTI’s Japanese flow by adding a pair of Carbon Kevlar Bride Gias seats to the interior.

With some Japanese influence added to the mix, Ricky stays true to his GTI’s german roots by looking to brands such as Oettinger and OSIR for upgraded aerodynamic parts. Already sporting European GTI taillights and the R32’s rear bumper with diffuser and center exhaust outlets, Ricky completely changes the front of his GTI with Oettinger’s front bumper and OSIR’s side skirts complete with carbon fiber inserts. Without a doubt one of our favorite pieces on Ricky’s GTI is his OSIR rear extended rear duckbill wing, complimenting the aggressiveness of the Oettinger front end.

Already having air suspension and upgraded engine modifications/tuning, the additions that Ricky implemented to his build without a doubt make his MKV GTI stand out from the rest. With the perfect fusion and balance of aftermarket Japanese and German parts, Ricky definitely set the standard for what MORE one can do to the MKV platform. So without further adieu, let’s revisit Ricky Luu’s bagged Volkswagen GTI…

iM Highlight: Rob’s 2007 Ford Shelby GT500

The Ford Shelby GT500, often regarded as one of the most iconic American muscle cars created by the late Carroll Shelby, captivated this car lover from the very beginning. Starting out in 1965, the Shelby Mustang was brought to light to fill the racing void in Ford’s lineup and has been a star ever since. Having taken a break with production in 1970 Rob’s love for this car was made a reality when it was reintroduced in 2007.

Rob picked up this example of Carroll Shelby’s masterpiece in 2011, after owning many mustangs, and got straight to work, bringing the style of the retro Shelby into fruition by adding the tungsten grey racing stripes and the Cervins rear tail lights circa 1968 GT500. Keeping the American muscle alive Rob tastefully fitted the car with genuine Ford Racing parts including axle back mufflers and short throw shifter. With a little upgrade to the supercharger pulley and some additional air flow with the JLT cold air intake, the tune from the Mustang Shop brought Rob’s car to push 630HP.

With all the additional goods putting down so much power, Rob decided it was time to bring his grip in check by special ordering a set of Shelby America wheels in 20×9 front and 20×10 rear. A small amount of gap reduction with the Eibach lower springs made it a little easier to throw the American muscle car into corners. With the history of the car and the love that Rob has for the Shelby Mustang it’s no wonder this car has become what it is today.

iM Highlight: Noel’s Nissan 240SX S14

When you put so much time and effort into something, there’s always that one question that will creep up in the back of your mind: ‘Is it worth it?’. The answer usually leaves you with two options, you will either stop what you are doing, quit and move on OR you will step up to the plate and continue to put in the work and time necessary to finish what you started. For Noel and his custom 1JZ equipped Nissan 240SX, “quitting” was definitely not an option.

A quick look at the exterior of Noel’s 240SX and what is immediately noticed is the aggressive URAS Type 4 aero and wide front (custom made) and rear fenders fitted with a wide set of Work Meister S1Rs. Noel, who came out to the shoot hood-less, rolled up to the location showing off his custom swapped toyota 1JZ-GTE power plant complete with more custom work done in the engine bay. One thing that we can’t help but commend Noel on is all the custom work done to his build to make it how you see it here.

With more plans under way (and under wraps) for Noel’s 240, we can’t wait to see what else Noel has planned for this project. So when you put so much time and effort into something, is it worth it? In Noel’s case, “Hell Yeah F*cking Right!” it’s worth it! On to the pics…

iM Highlight: Danio’s NSX

Since Dan’s last feature, a lot has changed. And by a lot, we mean Dan has made a switch up and is back so to speak with a completely new platform. The last car you may remember from Dan was his infamous S2000 (Featured HERE). Since then, Dan felt the need to move on from his S2000 and after a brief moment owning an E90 M3, Dan has found himself back to his Honda ways with undeniably every Honda Fan boy’s dream car, the NSX.

Although still a project in the making, Dan has quickly gotten to work on his NA1. Found on the exterior of his NSX are the NA2 Side Skirts and NA2 Rear Valence, fitted with the ’97 Front Lip. On the inside, Dan’s attention to detail is found with his Science of Speed center console, and an NSX-R horn button suited to match with his Momo Tuner steering wheel, Momo hub and titanium steering wheel bolts from Baller Bolts. An ARC Tear Drop Shift Knob and Recaro Pole Position seats can also be found in the interior of Dan’s NSX.

On the performance side of things, Dan’s NA1 sports a Taitec Header paired with a test pipe and Gruppe M Exhaust. A Prospeed Stage 3 Chip and RDX injectors are also implemented for a little more power gain.

The highlight of Dan’s NSX is found in the suspension, wheels and tires department. Dan definitely wasted no time getting his NSX lowered the “Level ONE way” (aka SLAMMED with no cares given, haha) on an 18″ set of Volk TE-37SLs wrapped in Yokohama S.Drive tires. All achieved by a set of BC Racing Coilovers and a custom spring rated set of Swift Springs.

Because this is still an on-going project for Dan, we definitely cannot wait to see more from this NA1 in the future. Looking at what he’s already got done, there’s no denying the endless possibilities that are in store for this project!
