iM Event Coverage: Weekly 403 Honda/Beyond.ca Meet – April…

It was a gorgeous night out for the last 403 Honda/Beyond.ca at Chinook, and that meant a really awesome turnout, the best turnout we’ve seen all season. Hopefully the meets stay as busy as they have been, if not busier!

Here’s a few of the many shots I took. To see the rest, check out the set on our Flickr stream: HERE

iM Event Coverage: Weekly 403 Honda/Beyond.ca Meet – April…

Another week has gone by, and that means another edition of the weekly 403 Honda/Beyond.ca Meet! Its nice to see these meets getting busier and busier as the weeks go by and the weather starts cooperating. Its nice to see cars that come every week, and see how they progress as the season goes by. Its also been great in the fact that the cars are getting more and more diverse.

Here’s a quick taste of some of the cars that were out this week, for lots more shots, check out the set on our Flickr stream: HERE

iM Event Coverage: 2013 Calgary International Auto Show

A bunch of us got to check out the Calgary International Auto Show that rolls into town every year. All the dealerships bring in a bunch of cars to the show, and its basically a big showoff of all the automakers cars, and then some. Didn’t take too many pics, and excuse the randomness, but here are a few of the cars that caught my eye.

VIP Accord in the Honda Booth. Not too bad in execution, it seems weird being an Accord, but they tried. Check out the baller VIP tray and seat stitching. Not sure what I think of the exhaust though.

Honda Gear prototype. Kinda neat, EG Civic sized. Obviously prototype since the wheels, calipers, and rotor were all one piece.
null

Fisker Karma, the solar panel roof stands out more on this color than on the dark color they had last year.
null

Bronze Aston Martin, such a gorgeous color.
null

McLaren booth.
null

The color on this Lamborghini was easily my favorite colored car at the show. Looks a little bit darker in person, but it was a flat grey with a clearcoat.
null

Crazy race FR-S in the Scion booth. Flared out, gutted interior, and some makeshift aero. Taillights look so much better all red, thats how they should’ve come.
null
null
null

BMW M6 Gran Coupe in Frozen Silver. The color is so subtle, yet so captivating.
null

Porsche 911 Carrera 4S. Love this body style.
null

Chrome wrapped Lambo in the ZR Auto booth. Are we in Dubai? Not a bad idea, but the wrap itself doesn’t look too good, seems like it would scratch and scuff easily.
null

Plasti-Dipped FRS in the Matrix Motorsports booth. Wild color, and sick headlights, I just don’t like the feel and texture of Plasti-Dip, seems too rough.
null

And last but not least, the Volkswagen Performance Booth! This one is special because out very own JC was manning this booth. He was given the task of taking this Golf, and outfitting it with a bunch of Volkswagen accessories.

iM Feature: Daniel Kowall’s BMW M3 GTR

Dedication.

Without a doubt, this is one of the key elements required when bringing a plan or project to life. Combine this with time and passion and eventually, that plan/project that one commits him/herself to pieces itself together nicely, and the outcome almost always leaves one with an incredible feeling of accomplishment and satisfaction. We say ‘almost always’, because it can also however, leave one with the hunger for more, ultimately pushing an individual to bring that original plan or project to another level; all of course driven by dedication. A prime example of utilizing true dedication is Daniel Kowall, and the outcome his BMW M3 GTR.

The story begins with Daniel as a child, always into the BMW brand and could not wait until the day he could drive and start to modify one of his own. His very first car in fact was a 1995 BMW 525, which he says ‘was riced out with a body kit, lowering springs and wheels’. Moving along, Daniel’s second car was a 1999 BMW 540i. Being in an automotive business program at the time in Ontario, Daniel was surrounded by peers who were all into cars and the car modifying lifestyle. A major step up from his “riced out” 525, Daniel’s 540i had everything a euro tuner could appreciate from a full Hamann body kit, coilovers, wheels, intake, exhaust, the list goes on. While in Ontario, Daniel also took up Auto Crossing as a hobby in the summer, which ultimately pushed his hunger for a car more focused for the track.

What car could Daniel possibly take advantage of and push to its absolute limits on the track? Enter the E46 BMW M3.

null

null

Found on an internet forum based out of Long Island, New York, Daniel sold his 540i and acquired an E46 M3 which he picked up and drove back to Ontario. Getting a little more serious with the sport of Auto Cross, Daniel quickly went to work on his M3 focusing on the suspension and chassis dynamics of the vehicle. Daniel immediately got the car aligned and corner balanced for the track and took his car to various Auto Cross events around Toronto such as the Mosport, Cayuga and Shannonville race tracks. Daniel even went on to take 1st, 2nd and 3rd place trophies at various race events in Cayuga. With a few trophies under his belt from Canadian Sport Compact Series events, Daniel was inspired to continue to build upon the M3, making it his dedicated track car.

null

null

Fast forwarding a little bit, Daniel finished school in Ontario and brought the M3 GTR to Calgary. With the M3 now in Calgary, Daniel’s dedication continued as he joined the Calgary Sports Car Club (CSCC), and participated in Time Attacks for two seasons at Race City in Calgary and Stratotech Raceway in Edmonton. Putting the M3 through these rigorous time attacks, Daniel realized that the M3 needed more power. With the M3 GTR looking aggressive as ever, adding the Active Autowerke supercharger kit was the next step for Daniel. Completing the Supercharger kit just last winter, this is how Daniel’s M3 currently sits-and it won’t stop there.

null

null

null

null

Based on the true facts of anyone with a dedicated project car, Daniel knows that his race inspired M3 is still a work in progress. With plans on adding a fully welded roll cage, a custom rear diffuser, and a new pulley and fuel system projected to make even more power, we could only hope that Calgary gets another track in the future so we can see, and feel, exactly what Daniel’s M3 GTR is capable of.

With Daniel’s BMW M3 GTR not only looking like, but performing like the complete race car, Daniel’s time, patience, passion and commitment definitely exemplify the dedication that anyone looking to build their current or next project car should utilize. So what are you waiting for?

…get dedicated!

iM Random Snaps: Friday Night Lights

With Summer quickly drawing to a close and the fall season pretty much upon us, the homies got together on this lovely Friday evening to take advantage of the nice weather and patio it up for dinner in Downtown Calgary. The evening was absolutely perfect for kicking it on a patio and once we finished eating, we decided to head to Village Ice Cream for some dessert and hang out for a bit to enjoy the ambient light set up that is located just beside the recently opened Ice Cream shoppe. There’s definitely nothing like chillin’ with the homies, enjoying some ice cream and admiring each others whips under a city night sky. But instead of being so cheesy about it, have a look at some photos we managed to snap while we were kicking it outside of Village Ice Cream…

iM Highlight: Ryan Dandurand’s 2011 BMW 1M

Some of you may remember Ryan Dandurand and his infamous Imola Red 1991 Toyota MR2 (Photos HERE) and the various stages that we’ve featured of it throughout the years. Today, Ryan’s back once again, but with something a little different from his MR2 this time around. Kicking it totally new school, Ryan’s focus is now drawn to his newly acquired 2011 BMW 1M.

For a quick little background on the 1M, BMW introduced it’s high performance sub-compact to North America with a limited stock release of 220 vehicles. Ryan’s 1M is actually the 65th of the 220 made. In typical Ryan Dandurand fashion, this 1M was not going to go untouched. In just under a year, Ryan has done quite a bit to make his M-Powered sub compact stand out not only from your typical 1 Series BMW’s out there, but fellow 1Ms on the street as well.

Most noticeable on the exterior of Ryan’s 1M is the subtle drop on KW V3 Coilovers paired with a very aggressive set of Gun Metal 19″ Advan RS wheels. Ryan’s attention to detail is also found in the exterior with IND black sidemarkers and a set of LUX LED Angel Eyes. In addition, Ryan chose a few exterior pieces from BMW Performance, such as the black kidney grilles and the carbon fiber rear spoiler. The interior retains most of it’s original equipment, but goes in the same BMW Performance route with an interior LED conversion and a suede steering wheel.

Going back into quick facts on the BMW 1M, this peppy little coupe sports BMW’s 3.0L N54 Twin Turbo engine. With an impressive performance package straight from the factory, Ryan builds upon the N54 and takes things a step further with a Stage 3 BMS JB4 tune.

With function over form definitely being the route Ryan is going with his BMW 1M, we’ll definitely be paying close attention to what else Ryan has in store in the future for this little coupe. For now, have a look at what Ryan has already accomplished, in such little time.

Check it out!

iM Highlight: Urban X South’s BMW E36 M3

Keeping it simple.

For anyone whose ever modded a vehicle, whether it be conservative or aggressive, a plan (or an idea) is usually sought out before continuing with a build. For Gary & Cort of Urban Expressions Wheel & Tire (South) and their 1999 model BMW E36 M3, the plan was straight forward; keep it simple.

null

Without a doubt, the main focus of this E36 M3 is found right where the boys from Urban Expressions specialize in, the wheels and tires. Sitting proper on 18×9.5 (front) and 18×11 (rear) custom painted Nagano Silver faced AC Schnitzer Rennsport Type 1s wrapped in Yokohoma S.Drives, the aggressive set up achieved by Gary & Cort is sure to break necks. Ultimately giving this E36 M3 a mean stance are the HSD Coilovers and UUC adjustable rear control arms.

null

null

null

While the wheel and suspension set up attract all the attention on this E36 M3, we can’t help but to admire the cleanliness of the interior, the well maintained chassis, and the close attention to detail found on the car as well. The exterior of this Bimmer sports it’s original M3 aero, OEM French Style headlights and foglamps, and a Motion Motorsports GT adjustable front splitter. The interior stays true to the M3 brand as Gary & Cort have re-upholstered the seats to maintain the OEM feel that any BMW enthusiast can appreciate.

null

null

On the performance side of things, Gary & Cort look to Active Autowerke with a full custom exhaust set up and a cold air intake. With plans for an Active Autowerke supercharger in the near future, the Urban X South E36 M3 is on the right track to being very unassuming, all the while staying maintaining it’s simply clean characteristic.

null

Keeping it simple can definitely go a long way and the boys of Urban Expressions Wheel & Tire South have done so with their simple, clean and mean BMW E36 M3. Whether going in a conservative route or an aggressive one, starting with a plan or an idea for a build can definitely prove for a positive outcome. If you’re looking to start with wheels & tires, don’t hestiate to give Gary & Cort a call for a consulation. 😉
