iM Feature: Jamie’s Honda S2000 v2.0

If you are new or fairly familiar to the car scene, you probably already know that you could break the scene down into two main groups. There is the group that represent the “Performance” side of things, and the group that represents the “Appearance” side. Dig a little deeper into the scene and a few builds will definitely stand out and represent a little bit of both.

When looking for that perfect balance of “Appearance” and “Performance”, there’s no disputing Jamie’s decision to opt for Honda’s rear wheel drive sports car, the S2000, as his platform. The exterior may scream “aggressive” with a quick glance. However, if you were to disect Jamie’s S2000 all the way down to its chassis, you will soon realize that there is a lot more to it than it’s stance, eye catching Volk CE28Ns, J’s rear wing, and J’s front canards.

Jamie, who actively participated at many Race City Motorsports Park Track Days, knew exactly what performance parts were needed to better his skill and technique on the road course. The more Jamie was on the track, the more the suspension, aero, and chassis were upgraded, with help from Japanese manufacturers like J’s Racing, T1-R and Cusco to name a few.

With the true passion of a car enthusiast, nothing was completed simply overnight, but achieved with careful thought and taken step by step, until the car performed precisely to Jamie’s driving style.

With an aggressive exterior and the proper knowledge on how to modify a vehicle according to a driver’s habits on the race track, Jamie’s S2000 is undeniably a true testament to achiveing that perfect balance between “Appearance” and “Performance”.

So if you ever get a chance to see Jamie’s S2000 in action at the track or even just cruising the streets, you now know there’s a lot more to it than it’s striking “Appearance”.

iM Feature: Giuseppe’s Nissan Skyline

Around 2004-05, Canadians were allowed to bring in vehicles from Japan and have them registered to drive on Canadian soil. When Canadians were given such an opportunity, cars that were once unheard of or simply dreamed about slowly started making their way from Japan. With more and more RHD vehicles being brought into Canada, cars like the Toyota Chaser and Nissan Siliva started becoming household names. One of the more popular platforms brought over from Japan definitely had to be the Nissan Skyline.

With a crazy surge of RHD Japanese vehicles being brought in from Japan, what once was a dream for many, slowly started becoming a nightmare for enthusiasts and even RHD owners. Parts were simply unobtainable for a few vehicles, while other enthusiasts were bothered by the ignorance of some RHD owners on the road.

Forward to the present, Japanese RHD vehicles are certainly still around, but not as popular as they once were. There are certain RHD vehicles that do stand out however, and these are the ones that everyone can have appreciation for.

As most will agree, a car can only be appreciated, if it is in the hands of the right owner. Have a look at Giuseppe’s RHD Nissan Skyline, and you will find a true testament to this statement.

The exterior appearance of Giuseppe’s car showcases his ambition towards making this Skyline unlike the others seen on Canadian streets. With a fresh Shadow Grey finish, Version Select V.1 Kit, Carbon Fiber Accents (Hood, Trunk, Mirrors, Canards) and a nicely stanced set of Work XD9s complimenting each other on the exterior, one look under the hood and this ambition goes a step further.

Giuseppe’s Skyline is powered by an RB25DET with power assistance from a Garrett GT30R Turbo, “Godzilla’s roar” can be heard through the A’PEXi Exhaust. Should this Skyline need to be brought to a sudden halt, a GT-R brake conversion answers the call.

A look at the interior of the vehicle, and you will find that whoever is in the driver’s seat, is given first priority. A Bride Seat and Takata Harness provide the driver with a better feel and more focus for the road.

Since the Skyline’s RWD platform is a favorite amongst drifters, you better believe that Giuseppe’s Skyline has it’s suspension game on lock. With suspension goodies from Tein, Whiteline, JIC, and Megan to name a few, there’s no doubting this Skyline’s grip & drift abilities.

Displaying an overall impressive package, we gotta give it up to Guiseppe for having one hell of a Skyline that we can all appreciate. As common as it may be for Skylines and other RHD vehicles to be on the roads in Canada, it is uncommon to find ones that are well thought out, and orchestrated in the right hands.

Well done, Giuseppe!

iM Feature: OG (Orlando’s Garage) 1986 Toyota Corolla GT-S

The AE86.

Popularized by the Japanese Manga “Intial D”, the Toyota AE86 Corolla is probably one of the most desired cars by comic book fans, drifters and enthusiasts alike. Anyone who’s ever owned, ridden in, or come close to an 86 knows there’s just something that leaves one to wonder just what it is about the car that leaves them wanting more.

Is it the car’s 50/50 balance? It’s trademark Toyota “odd looks”? Or the fact that it was considered Toyota’s last “compact” RWD sports car? Your guess is as good as ours.

What happens though, when you mix a “Toyota at heart” soul and the 86 platform? Well, have a look at Orlando Tan’s 1986 Toyota Corolla GT-S.

Orlando Tan of “(O.G.) Orlando’s Garage” has made quite a name for himself when it comes to anything and everything to do with custom motor swaps, and living the 86 life. A prime example of Orlando’s work you ask? Well, you may remember Benny’s F20-swapped Panda 86 that we featured a little over a year ago.

Upon first glance of Orlando’s AE86, the exterior just leaves you breathless. With Toyota’s attractive “Super Red” paint shining, fitted with a Kouki Trueno front bumper, Zenki Trueno front lip, Kouki Trueno side skirts, Kouki Trueno rear bumper, and Toyota Kouki OEM “Redline” taillights, everything else in the car perfectly falls into place.

When it came to the interior of this AE86, Orlando knew very well that almost all interior pieces are just impossible to find (in good condition) nowadays. To kick it old school, one look of the interior and you will find nothing but pristine OEM goodness. That’s right, the interior is well restored and Orlando went all out to ensure the interior remained all OEM Toyota everything.

With the AE86 well known for it’s suspension, this Corolla stays glued to the road thanks to a Carbing Tri-Bar strut tower bar, Techno Toy Tuning front and rear coilovers and KYB AGX shocks on all four corners.

With an amazing interior and exterior, you’re left to wonder just what is in the belly of the beast. As mentioned earlier, Orlando, known for his incredible swaps and custom work, keeps his signature going with a Beam’s grey top VVT-i 3SGE suited with a Toyota CT20B Turbo, under the hood. With a very clean swap to perfectly flow with the rest of the car, Orlando’s Beam’s AE86 just screams “unassuming”.

So just what is it about the AE86 that leaves one wanting more? In Orlando’s case, this AE86 is his answer.

With countless hours, late nights and early mornings going into this car at Orlando’s Garage, this is one AE86 that you truthfully have to see in person to believe. Until then though, we hope these photos are enough to tide you over.

iM Feature: Punit Patel’s 2001 Acura Integra

When one initially steps into the car scene, you see what others do and take note. Some follow suit, others directly copy another one’s style and there are a few who will break that barrier and do something that’s completely unheard of. Eventually, one will start to realize that a real project car, always progresses and will never really be, a “finished” project.

When illmotion’s very own Punit Patel was in search of his project car, he sought after one of Japan’s most popular tuned cars, the Honda Integra. Known as the Acura Integra here in North America, Punit originally wanted to acquire a Championship White Type-R. At the time of his search, the Type-R was pretty hard to find. With no luck on the Type-R, Punit set his eyes on a Milano Red SE Model. This was only the beginning.

The first stage of Punit’s Integra started with the basics. Rear wiper delete, a fresh paint job, color matched door trims, a rear window visor, CF Hood & Trunk, LED instrumentation, in-car electronics & audio, HIDs, Coilover suspension, Apexi World Sport exhaust, JDM Recaro Front Seats & Rear Bench, and a set of 16” Rotas were the start of his addiction.

Since Punit didn’t acquire the Type-R that he originally wanted, that didn’t stop him from getting a Type-R motor swap. Unsatisfied with the look of the 16” Rotas he originally put on the car, Punit stepped it up with a set of gold 17” Work Meister S1s.

With positive reception from friends and peers, Punit, like everyone else in the scene, had his fair share of haters. Would the hate stop Punit? Nope. It only helped Punit push the Integra to new heights.

On its third stage, Punit decided it was time to do something to the Integra that had not been done before in Calgary’s scene. Adding a few pieces like Raybrig fog lights, a Spoon N1 exhaust and OEM Integra Window Visors were just a taste of what was to come.

With downtime during the winter here in Calgary, Punit opted for another motor swap; the K24A2 from the Acura TSX. If that wasn’t enough, Punit sold the Meisters and took it another step further with a set of 16” CCW Race-Version Classics. With stance being a big thing in the car scene at the moment, best believe Punit was on point when it came to fitment.

The K24 motor swap wasn’t an overnight success, as it did have its ups and downs (oil pans what’s up) and the fitment may not have appeased everyone’s tastes. But because of Punit’s patience and understanding of having a car project, this is one Integra that was built according to how the owner wanted it to be.

With a recent car accident this summer (not at fault), Punit thought it might have been the end for his Integra as it could’ve been dismissed as a write-off. However with good graces on his side, the Integra is back and running better than ever. With the Carbon Fiber trunk & hood now color matched, custom teal powder coating done on the CCW faces, and an authentic Gen.1 Mugen rear wing, the car project continues to keep going…

…and going harder every year.

iM Feature: Almond Deguzman’s 335i WORK beast

Almond and I have known each other a short while and we met while we both used to work at Apple. Kind of a weird place to meet a car guy – you’d think all you would meet are people that want to make Steve Jobs rich. Little did I know that Almond – despite his name (that kind of threw me off), was a baller and a half. Working at Apple just for the hell of it, checking in on foursquare and becoming the Mayor of Holt Renfrew every other day and deciding he was going to take the day off from his real job when I just got into mine.

We had been tweeting each other back and forth about how he was getting coilovers installed and each time I saw a tweet about it, I would simply reply “dump it”. Up until last week, Almond tweeted back and said he wanted a photoshoot. Done. I want to see if he even took my tweets into consideration. To be quite honest, I’m not even sure what his car had done or even looked like aside from the sub-par quality pictures from his iPhone (ha!)

iM Feature: Chris’s Triumph TR7

I had the opportunity to shoot Chris’s Trumph TR7 a while ago and finally got the chance to get it up. I have to admit, this isn’t a car you see everyday – in fact, this is a car I have never seen until last year at the Driven car show. I was literally confused and delighted when he rolled in the booth because at first glance, if you don’t know Triumph, then you’re going to wonder what car this is. At second glance, you’ll know the SR20 sitting under the hood is no joke.

Chris has done most of the work himself with the help of various shops around town and the resources he could find – not everybody can help you if they don’t have many parts for it in the first place unfortunately.

One of the best thing about Chris’s car is that it’s so light and with the SR20 powering it, there’s very little holding it back. That’s the number one thing we strive for when building our cars – weight reduction. He’s got it stock.

iM Feature: Gabes 1990 Civic EF Hatch

Being from Vancouver Island, you don’t hear a whole lot about the cars and culture we have. Being a 2 hour ferry ride from Vancouver, and 3 hours from Seattle, the major car populations of those cities over throw what we have, and often times steal the spot light. But little do people know, we have some of the sickest cars around. One being Gabe’s 1990 Honda Civic.

September 2009 marked the starting date of this new project when Gabe purchased the rusted, battered old civic to make it his own. Gabe’s the kind of guy who builds everything himself, from custom down pipes, to waste gate dumps, to piecing together his engine, he certainly doesn’t let anyone else touch his car with a wrench, and certainly doesn’t cut any short cuts when he builds these purpose built projects. Gabe has been building some of the islands cleanest cars for a number of years now out of his small garage at home.

Its been a long time coming, and lets just say that Gabe’s not even close to done yet. He still has plans to make this car look and perform on another level. It’s going to be interesting to watch as he continues on through out the years perfecting this old school hatch. You will be able to see this hatch at this years Driven To Perform event in Vancouver.

iM Feature: Ryan’s 2004 Honda Civic SIR

Was nice to get the entire iM crew out this past weekend, shot the shit and snapped a bunch of pics. Anyways on to my car which has emerged from the garage slightly different then previous incarnations.

The first order of business was getting the whole stance/wheel setup figured out. I had purchased a near perfect sized set of discontinued Volk SE-37k’s almost a year ago. They weren’t in the greatest of shape so refinishing was a must. And as everyone knows the wheels will make or break any great build so the color was a tough decision, however at the end of the day it’s just paint so I went for it….. as seen below. Love it or hate it, OJ orange.

After rolling for 5+ years on extremely lowered set of Tein coilovers it was definitely time for an upgrade. I wanted to go slightly lower so after loads of research and harassment of my fellow EP3 owners I settled on some Buddy Club race spec dampers paired with custom length and spring rate Swift springs.

Last order of business was cleaning up the interior. Was rocking the red Recaro seats for quite some time and the red was obviously going to clash with the OJ wheels so they were sold off in short order. Replaced them with a pair of kevlar backed Status Ring GT’s and Buddy Club super low down rails.

Couple other minor tweaks and the car is officially done for at least another year, possibly longer this time! Ha. Wish it were that easy.
