iM: The Re-Up 2010 (Part 4)

Continuing on with our recap of iM Features & Highlights from 2010:

|Owner: Justin Kan
|Vehicle: Acura Integra Type-R

Only one word can describe Justin’s style when it comes to his cars: DUMPED. Following suit with this style from Justin, here we have a recent feature of his Type-R. Going against the grain of “hella flush illest poke flush stance”, Justin’s ITR keeps it subtle yet effective:

iM Highlight: Justin Kan’s Acura Integra Type-R

|Owner: Mark (New owner now I believe?)
|Vehicle: Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution 8

This is a feature shared to us by the homie Jeff Chin. Evolution VIIIs are definitely a rare find here in Canada but if there’s one done proper look no further than this “Red Bastard”.

iM Feature: The Red Bastard Evo VIII

|Owner: Jamie Fry
|Vehicle: Honda S2000

Another recent feature here on illmotion, Jamie’s S2000 is definitely one that will snap your neck. Recognized for constantly being at the track, there’s no denying Jamie’s passion for cars and his dedication for driving.

iM Feature: Jamie Fry’s Honda S2000

|Owner: Michael Browning
|Vehicle: 2008 Mazdaspeed 3

With wagons becoming a more and more popular platform to build upon, it’s no surprise that Michael Browning sought after a Mazdaspeed 3. With Mazda’s “True Red” finish and a set of gold alloys, it’s only right that Michael focused his attention to the car’s power to vindicate it’s looks.

iM Highlight: Michael Browning’s 2008 Mazdaspeed 3 “SLOWAGN”

|Owner: Andrew Taylor
|Vehicle: 1997 Volkswagen GTI VR6 Turbo

Andrew Taylor is no stranger to the Volkswagen brand. When he purchased this GTI VR6 Turbo from the owner of the very same name, never did he front nor claim that he built this car himself. However with a few modifications of his own, it won’t be very long until Andrew “Taylors” this GTI to make it his own.

iM Feature: Andrew’s VR6 Turbo GTI

|Owner: Aldrich Evangelista
|Vehicle: 2008 Subaru Impreza WRX (Wagon)

illmotion crew member Aldrich Evangelista doesn’t mess around when it comes to attention to detail. His 2008 Subaru Impreza WRX is a true testament to this statement. With constant innovations done to his WRX, we can’t wait to see what Rich has in store for this Subie next season.

iM: The Re-Up 2010 (Part 3)

We’re gonna keep things going with Part 3 of our iM: Re-Up for 2010 to refresh your guys’ memory and for those who may have just started rolling with us, can peep what we’ve been up to earlier on in what has been an awesome year!

|Owner: Steve Eng of The Perfect Dark
|Vehicle: Infiniti FX35

The Perfect Dark, responsible for a lot of vinyl work done on Calgary’s whips whether it be window tinting, car wrapping, to headlight & taillight 3M applications. Steve’s also got the Carbon Fiber wrap game on lock too! If you ever wondered what this homie with sick talent drove, well have a look:

iM Highlight: The Perfect Dark’s FX35

|Owner: Josh Sivadas & Reggie Mah (previous owners)
|Vehicle: Acura Integra Type-R & Acura Integra GSR

The previous owners of these sick tegs have recently sold these vehicles and have moved on to bigger and better things for 2011. Spoiler alert: Josh has moved on to an E46 M3 Cab so definitely be on the look out for that next year!

iM Feature: Function Vs. Form

|Owner: Steve Poyntz
|Vehicle: 1992 2JZ Toyota Cressida

When Steve isn’t out at the track drifting up a storm in his 86, he’s cruising in his matte black, 2JZ powered Toyota Cressida. I stand by my statement when I say this thing is “Sleeper of the Year”.

iM Feature: Steve Poyntz’s 1992 Toyota Cressida

|Owner: Aubrey Amante
|Vehicle: Mazdaspeed 3

It’s very rare that you’ll find a girl in this scene. But when you do come across someone like Aubrey, there’s no denying that the girls can play just as well as the guys. Believe that. The Autoexe front bumper and grille definitely set this speed3 apart from the rest too!

iM Feature: Aubrey Amante’s 2008 Mazdaspeed3

|Owner: Chris Chan
|Vehicle: 2007 Honda Civic Si

A dope set of Works and a DIY Matte Black vinyl wrap on this Civic Si and you’ll know right away that Chris Chan is doing big things for this project. Though still an unfinished project, it’ll be interesting to see what Chris has in store for this Si for next season. We can’t wait.

iM Highlight: Chris Chan’s 2007 Honda Civic Si

iM: The Re-Up 2010 (Part 2)

Here we are on a roll to continue part 2 for you peeps. We will be covering all the features we had covered in the past 9 months for those of you that have just joined us. Those of you who have rolled with us since the beginning, well here’s some deja vu for ya.

|Owner: Dal and Jackie Law
|Vehicle: K20 ITR & Honda S2000

What would illmotion be without Dal and Jackie’s whips? Dal’s K20 powered monster and Jackie’s internet sensation S2k. Attention to detail, parts and function while still pushing the boundaries of fitment and style, both Jackie and Dal have it down. If you’re ever down at the track, you’ll see these guys pushing the limits of their cars. Peep their feature.

iM Feature: The Law Brothers

|Owner: Davey-Lee Pergentile
|Vehicle: 1987 Porsche 944S

If you guys remember way back when we first started, we had Davey-Lee’s Porsche up and it might not have been the tuner car that some of us are used to, but it is definitely a car that deserves praise. Davey has kept her Porsche in pristine condition and it’s things like this that every auto enthusiast can appreciate.

iM Feature: Davey-Lee’s 1987 Porsche 944S

|Owner: Darren Uong
|Vehicle: Acura RSX

Darren’s RSX is one of the few around town that has been built up cleanly with Mugen’s style. Shortly after getting his new shoes, we wanted to shoot it and be the first to have it up on interwebz. White is right.

iM Feature: Darren’s Mugen DC5

|Owner: Al Patel
|Vehicle: BMW X5

Al’s been in this car game for a long time and we had the opportunity to shoot his X5 before the summer came to an end. Over the years he has been building cars from ITR’s to Nissan Skylines. Even with a family, Al is still in the game in a different form. Baller status.

iM Feature: Al’s BMW X5izzle

|Owner: Terence Ng
|Vehicle: Mercedes C230

Terence and his Merc has been holding its own for as long as we can remember and since this past year, he’s been fitted with some new additions to keep it unique while classy at the same time. Terence and his perfectionist attitude helps him build this Mercedes in a style much different than the VIP look that we’re used to… and we love it.

iM: The Re-Up 2010 (Part 1)

‘March 2010.

8 friends got together and decided to start a Calgary based car crew. When deciding to use the name “illmotion”, it was only a matter of time that these 8 individuals would create a website to bring fellow car enthusiasts from all over the world together and see how cars are modified in Alberta, and Canada in general.’

With 2010 being a great year for illmotion and over 40 cars featured on the site, we would like to take this opportunity to recap all the cars we’ve featured and highlighted (with links provided of course) since we started illmotion (in no special order, keeping it random).

We would also like to thank the owners of these vehicles for taking the time to come out and do these photoshoots with us. For without the owners of these vehicles, there would be no “illmotion” nor most importantly, a scene in which we can all share this passion we have for modifying and tuning our vehicles.

March definitely does not seem that long ago, and since then we’ve garnered so much love and support from you guys that we can’t wait to get the 2011 season rolling.

Thank you all for a great year. Keep rockin’ with us in 2011 and best believe that bigger and better things are coming up in the new year!

Oh, and Happy Holidays fam!

On to the Re-Up…

|Owner: Romel Tenchavez
|Vehicle: 1985 Toyota Corolla GT-S Turbo

Nowadays, finding a non-rusted, non-bastardized AE86 is hard to find in Calgary. Well look no futher than Romel’s Zenki Turbo AE86 project. Rockin’ a fresh set of Dori-Doris and a Zenki front end (Zenki rear to be installed next year) Romel is on the right track in his pursuit for a one-off Zenki AE86.

iM Feature: Romel Tenchavez’s 1985 Toyota Corolla GT-S Turbo

|Owner: Steve Chan
|Vehicle: 2002 Acura RSX Type-S (DC5)

Steve was definitely on point when it came to modifying his 2002 Acura RSX Type-S. Sitting on a nice set of Advan RGs and sporting Mugen Aero, stay tuned next year to see what Steve has in store for his super clean DC5.

iM Feature: Steve Chan’s DC5

|Owner: Brad Atkins
|Vehicle: Honda Civic SiR (EM1)

SiRs are definitely hard to come by these days, but Brad’s unmistakable “VTEC spraying machine” will definitely snap your neck when he’s rollin’ through the city, or rippin’ it up at the track.

iM Feature: Brad Atkins’ EM1

|Owner: Cee
|Vehicle: Honda S2000

Our very first (and unforgettable) ‘official’ illmotion feature, Cee’s S2000 was the definition of “Simplicity is Key”. The black exterior sitting on nicely fitted gun-metallic TE37s just sets it off! Well, it caught our attention anyways.

“Black and Yellow, Black and Yellow, Black and Yellow, Black and Yellow”

The unmistakable lyrics to Wiz Khalifa’s single is what comes to mind when Reggie’s car is spotted around town. Aside from it’s color motif, it’s unique stance definitely grabs the attention of anyone who notices it, as does it’s roaring Buddy Club Spec 2 exhaust.

Inspired by Dal Law’s Integra Type-R, Reggie had his mind set on building one for himself. To set this project apart from the other Integras in Calgary, Reggie built this car with “form over function” in mind.

Before “Form Over Function” however, Reggie also took this vehicle to Race City track days to get a better feel for the car and to see how it performed on the track. With a fine list of suspension mods, there is no second thoughts on how well the vehicle conquered the track.

Reggie’s attention to detail cannot go unnoticed as well. With simple things like the Integra Type-R front end conversion and Phoenix Yellow paint job, shaved door moldings, Status seats with Takata harnesses, and a Honda S2000 push button start retrofit, there’s no doubting Reggie’s pursuit for one crazy Integra.

With “Black & Yellow” being the theme of Reggie’s car, don’t be surprised if you hear that track playing in his whip at a stop light. And just like Wiz says, “No Keys, Push To Start!” Uh huh, you know what it is!

iM Feature: Romel Tenchavez’s 1977 Toyota Celica GT

photos//prashant.topiwala & jason.hoang

|OWNER: Romel Tenchavez
|VEHICLE: 1977 Toyota Celica GT

In this day and age, car modifying/tuning is very accessible to us in which parts can simply be bolted on and ready to go. With access to the internet, we can all obtain information which can make our cars look “Hella Flush”, “JDM”, and we can even achieve that “10 Second Car” that they talk about in movies.

Rewind to the past and you start to wonder just how they did it back in the day. Enter Romel Tenchavez’s 1977 Toyota Celica GT. After literally growing up with this vehicle I can tell you that this car definitely wasn’t put together overnight.

Every modification on this Celica was mostly custom fitted and fabricated to achieve the “Retro Look with Modern Technology” title that Romel aimed for.

Purchased in 1992 from a relative in San Francisco California, Romel sought after one of Toyota’s most infamous Sports Cars from the 70s, The Toyota Celica GT. Originally sporting a 20R carburated engine and original white paint, little did this Celica know what was going to become of it.

Forward to 18 years later, this car remains in pristine condition and comes out on occasion whether it be at the track, car shows or meets. After reaching a 1/4 mile best of 13.7s @ 109mph, who knows what Romel has in store for this one of a kind classic…

Without a doubt the biggest challenge for Romel was converting the Celica’s carburated engine to it’s now electronically fuel injected turbocharged engine. With no given information on how to do the swap, the entire project was simply “trial and error” with friends and family putting in countless hours to get it how you see it today.

Initially, Romel swapped the 20R carb motor to a “modern” fuel injected/turbocharged 22R engine. Upgrade the suspension, wheels, audio and Blue Streak Mica Pearl Paint from Toyota’s last generation Celica, now you have something that is totally offset from the rest.

After countless runs at the Race City 1/4 mile track and reaching a personal best of 14.2 @ 101mph with the 22R motor, Romel decided it was time to move on; not how you think, however. After being in contact with Duncan Fraser & Ross Farmham of Race Tech Engineering, Romel was able to obtain a fully tuned 20R Turbocharged Race Engine, which is now the heart of this beastly Celica.

The thing I love most about this car is how it keeps up to today’s technologies and even today’s “trends”. With sick fitment on either his Dori-Dori wheels or the current Watanabe Type-A set-up there’s no denying that proper fitment has always been around and inevitably, will never die.

With cars like this, we definitely gotta show love and appreciation for the old school. Without guys like Romel in our scene, we would have no real foundation on why we all do what we do to our cars.

iM Feature: Al’s BMW X5izzle

Since we’re on the subject of SUV’s – let’s show some love to Al’s BMW X5. Al is no freshman to the car scene and for those of you who know Al other than being a moderator on beyond.ca, he’s one of the OG’s in the 403. Al has come from a nice stable of cars in the past. From an Integra Type-R to a Mazdaspeed Protege, he moved on to the Euro scene with two Mercedes SL55’s with one of them being an AMG. As if that wasn’t enough power, Al turned to Japan’s “Godzilla”, the Nissan GT-R R32.

Now I guess with age comes sophistication and some practicality. What more can you ask for with the X5. Simplicity works best here and as you can see, it’s still aggressive as ever.

iM Feature: Perfect Dark FX35

We’ve had a couple of blog posts here talking about the great work performed by Steve from Perfect Dark Tinting on some of the cars featured, and/or on our own team members cars. So with working on everyone else’s cars, does he have time to work on a vehicle of his own? If he did, what would it look like?

The answer:

This pimp Infiniti FX35 is Steves daily driver, as well as being the shop workhorse capable of hauling around the tools and materials of his trade.

Steve has done most of the work himself to set his FX apart from the crowd. Some of his touches include the tint film on the headlights, foglights, taillights, and rear reflectors. Also, the careful but perfect black vinyl wrap job on the front grille and his own signature design name on his hood/fender ensure that its one of a kind. He also had the factory wheels redone in black to keep in the clean black and white theme.

Look for more of this ride next season as Steve continues to personalize it. And if you need any work done, whether its tint, vinyl wrap, 3M paint protection, or exterior tint films, do not hesitate to contact him at (403) 808-8228 for a quote or appointment. Tell him you saw this article!

Also make sure to check out their Facebook page to ‘like’ them, and to check out pics of work they’ve done (click their logo):

iM Feature: Dub Rat

Been a while since I have posted some pics so why not continue the Euro theme that seems to be happening right now.

Little story behind this car, the GTi before used to be owned by a friend of mine who did most of the work like sourcing the mint ATS cups and decking it out with rare parts. But I’m pleased to tell you that a couple months ago I had the opportunity to buy it and jumped on it and have never been happier.

Some specs of the car:

2.0L Bottom End
1.8L Head
Unknown Street Cam
Unknown Chip
Raceland Race Header
Full 2.5″ TT exhaust with Borla Muffler
Full Recaro Interior
Euro Tales
15×7 ATS cups wrapped in 195/40 Toyo T1R’s
F+R slotted/drilled disc brakes
Weitec Coils
Bigger sway bars

Not complete without a Royal Pine air freshener hanging from my wink mirror, Plan on getting some new more aggressive wheels next spring, maybe some CCWs and a bigger cam for the motor. Thanks for checking it out.

iM Feature: Terence’s Merc C230

It seems like we’ve taken a turn for the good to some more Euro content on the site. It’s great because we have supporters and readers that have a bunch of different interests and we want to show off anything worth being shown off.

I remember seeing Terence’s car for the first time when I participated in my first car show back in 2008. At the time, I was new to the scene with little experience with anything at all and I think Terence’s car was the first one I’ve ever seen that sat so flush. I strictly remember asking him what he was running on the rears and he said “265/x/x”. At the time, I was running 215’s on 7″ wide wheels (which I rubbed on somehow) and I loved Terence’s stance. Jealousy kicked in here.

Fast forward and now we’re all playing the fitment game and Terence is still in it with an even more aggressive setup – still with no rub. In my opinion, it’s tough to make a Euro like a Mercedes look classy without the rice – which is supposed to be for us import guys…

It’s great when there are guys out there that pay attention to detail for every part of their car. It’s rare to find because it’s not always in a person’s best interest to spend money on parts people don’t generally “see”. It’s when you break it down that you can appreciate the work like this that is put in.
