iM Feature: Alex’s Acura Integra

It’s been four years since we last snapped pictures of Alex’s car and it has changed quite a bit since that shoot. It was an awesome car back then and is even better now. You may recognize a few of these pictures as Alex’s car was just recently featured in Honda Tuning Magazine.

iM: The Re-Up 2013 (Part 4)

Gonna wrap things up in the features/highlights side of things as we roll ahead with Part 4 of 2013 Re-Up series! Definitely stay tuned for Part 5 & 6 as we take a look back at Driven 2013 and Sunday School 2013! Let’s get right to it…

There’s no denying the fact that the FR-S has definitely made it’s imprint on the automotive scene this past year but it’s awesome to see the new school “86” owners linking up with the old school “86” owners like we have here featuring Beniot’s FR-S and Spencer’s AE86. Peep the old school and new school love.

When the Honda Fit is brought up amongst car enthusiasts, one thing comes to mind: ‘it’s a daily driver’. Be that as it may, the Honda Fit as many of us may not know has a very strong tuning culture in Japan. A look at Gangster D’s daily driven Honda Fit and one will you can get a pretty good idea of what can be done to Honda’s beloved subcompact car.

An S14 with a 1JZ power plant?! For Noel, this build in the works is definitely worth it…and we can’t wait to see what Noel has up his sleeve for this coming season!

iM Highlight: Noel’s S14 Nissan 240SX

Undeniably a big part of car history, the Shelby Mustang lives on in today’s car society and it’s owners like Rob who don’t let anyone forget about Ford’s prized pony.

iM Highlight: Rob’s 2007 Ford Shelby GT500

illmotion’s videographer Corey O’Hara, hits us with another one of his masterpieces this time showcasing Terry’s immaculate 1998 Acura Integra Type-R. We definitely can’t wait to see more videos like this from Corey this year!

Wrapping up 2013 was an update on Ricky’s Volkswagen GTI. With that perfect fusion of Japanese and German performance Ricky definitely goes the distance to making his GTI stand out from typical European fashion.

iM Event Coverage: Weekly 403 Honda/Beyond.ca Meet – April…

It was a gorgeous night out for the last 403 Honda/Beyond.ca at Chinook, and that meant a really awesome turnout, the best turnout we’ve seen all season. Hopefully the meets stay as busy as they have been, if not busier!

Here’s a few of the many shots I took. To see the rest, check out the set on our Flickr stream: HERE

iM Event Coverage: Weekly 403 Honda/Beyond.ca Meet – April…

You can almost feel it in the air. The days are getting longer, the weather is getting warmer, and the cars that have been hiding are starting to come out. The season is almost upon us, and for a handful of people, it already has. And that means the 403 Honda/Beyond.ca weekly meets are starting to get into full swing. I’ve been to a few already, and they’ve been starting to get busier and busier. Here are a few snaps I took that somewhat darker night, then it got cold, so I put the camera away:

iM Feature: Terry Woo’s 1998 Acura Integra Type-R

You’ve heard it over and over again, and anyone with a true project car will swear by it: a project car is never truly finished, it just continues to progress and get better over time. A lot of cars come and go, but it’s the ones that come out and continue to keep up with the times that truly stand out and set the tone for both newcomers and those already familiar to the scene. As repetitive as we may sound regarding project cars that are never done and maintain consistency, there’s a particular Integra Type-R that takes everything we’ve always been saying, and takes things to a completely different light. With a super extensive parts list that will make any Honda fan boy fall head over heels in amazement, this Integra Type-R is owned by none other than Terry Woo.

An exterior look of Terry’s Integra Type-R and “Subtle Aggression” immediately comes to mind. Featuring a full JDM DC2 front conversion, complete with OEM Type-R optional side and rear skirts, a DC2 Voltex wing and sporting Volk’s timeless classic TE37s to name a few, there’s no denying the super functional yet aggressive appearance of Terry’s immaculate build.

Moving onto the interior, and the attention to detail that Terry has implemented into his Integra definitely goes unnoticed. While the biggest highlight in the interior of this Integra are the Mugen S1R Bucket Seats complete with Mugen rails, the subtle things make a huge statement such as the full 2001 CDM Red and USDM Faux CF Interior. The Mugen FG360 steering wheel, OEM Checkered Floor mats and trunk mat, JDM airbag delete, JDM Red Stitch Shift Boot, and Spoon/Mugen Hybrid instrument cluster are just a few more of the attention to detail pieces that truly make Terry’s Type-R stand out.

To stiffen and ultimately upgrade the chassis/handling of his Type R, Terry pulls out all the right stops as his Integra sports Tein Flex coilovers with EDFC, a JDM Front Sway Bar, Mugen rear sway bar, a Carbing 3 Point Strut Tower Bar, J’s Roll Center Adjusters, and Miracle X-Bars complete with the optional strut bar. Just recently, Terry added new hardened front and rear trailing and control arm bushings with Hard Race end links.

As we mentioned earlier, real project cars continue to progress and get better over time. We can’t stress this enough when we see cars like Terry’s as the powerplant he has chosen keeps up with today’s technology. Underneath the hood of Terry’s Type-R is a fully built K20 Motor. For more power, Terry’s K20 is boosted with a GT35R Turbo set up and to give the engine less restriction, a custom 3″ Fujitsubo exhaust was implemented as well. Conservatively tuned with 91 Octane, Terry’s Boosted K20 is rated at 400whp/290tq @ 17psi. Not only putting down impressive power, Terry’s attention to detail continues in the engine bay with what seems like countless Mugen goodies as well to the engine and radiator cap, coil pack cover, all the way down to the bolts.

With what undeniably seems like the total package and a modification list that any Honda/Type-R enthusiast would only dream of having, it’s no wonder that Terry’s friends have given him the moniker “Dailo R”, which can also be found on his license plate. For those wondering the meaning of “Dailo”, in Chinese it translates to “Big Brother”, but is also used as a slang meaning “Boss”; which is quite fitting for the hard work and dedication that’s been put into Terry’s Integra. With what we’d like to call a true project car, it’s cars like Terry’s Type-R that continue to motivate and inspire the rest of us, always looking to keep up with the lifestyle of real function and true form.

iM Event Coverage: Weekly 403 Honda/Beyond.ca Meet – July…

A few of us made it out to the Beyond.ca weekly meet at chinook this week and it was a pretty decent turn out so I had to grab the camera and snap a few pics.

If you feel like attending, these are held every Wednesday if the weather is decent at the top rear parkade of Chinook Centre/Mall.

There is something we do need to mention. There were a few dangerous incidents that happened last night by others. We all have the urge to do stuff like burnouts, drifts and stuff like that after meets and such, but just as a reminder, the Beyond.ca meets have been held there at Chinook for years now on Wednesday evenings, with the security at the mall for the most part letting us hang out there as long as we behave. Incidents like this will weaken the relationship between security and us fellow car lovers, and they may not allow us to meet there anymore if incidents like this continue. Please help us by refraining from burnouts, speeding up the ramp, drifting, leaving garbage around. This in turn will make sure we continue to have a place to go on Wednesdays.

iM Highlight: Taylor’s 1994 GSR

Most of my friends have always known me as a VW kind of guy, and some of you might remember my old feature with my VR6 swapped Mk2 Jetta Coupe. Hanging around with nothing but Honda guys, it was only a matter of time before they would have me converted. After 4 years of convincing I finally caved in and picked up this 1994 GSR. I picked up the car with the intention of doing a full itr replica, while the car already had the jdm front end with various other itr spec parts, I have accumulated numerous parts to finish it off  the exterior before I head into the motor. While I have big plans for the car this winter, I just recently picked up a set of Gramlight T57-RC’s and thought what better way to begin a new chapter in my life as a Honda enthusiast, to share with you what I will be working with. Enjoy.

iM Film: Derrek’s 1994 Acura Integra RS

Running a little behind on our video editing but better late then never. Here is a follow up to Derrek’s feature from a few weeks ago.

Check out the full feature on Derrek’s Integra here.

iM Flashback: Driven 2010 Recap

With Driven 2012 coming up quickly, we thought it’d be a good idea to look back and see what everyone had to offer in 2010 and what we can look forward to for this year. Since Driven was skipped for us in 2011 – there has been a significant amount of time for everybody to get their whips refreshed. From new cars, to new parts, complete overhauls or tweaks to an already existing minty car, we think this will be the best Driven yet. We have a handful of fresh new faces joining us this year and it’s only a matter of time before we all gather at the Olympic Oval once again.

Looking back – many cars are now gone and have been passed on to new owners and some remain alive and well and will be joining us once again. Let’s take a look…

Dal’s K20 Type R – this was a long-time build for Dal and it was pristine. Reggie now has possession of it and stripped it apart with new plans. From what I’ve seen, he’s doing a great job and going from the ground up with new parts left right and center. It should be at the show this year, so look forward to that!

Alan’s JDM conversion CSX Type-S. So clean and one of the first (and probably still only) to do the conversion with legit OEM parts and tastefully IMO. This is out of his possession now.

Jackie’s infamous S2000. Jackie has some plans for the upcoming year and he won’t be showing in Driven, but he’ll be coming out for our show & shine with new toys to boot.

Hoang’s K20 Civic. One of the most unique and cleanest builds I got to see in 2010. Everything from the J’s wing to the custom splitter and canards and his I.C.E. set up. Not to mention the K20 under the hood.

Steve Poyntz’s 2JZ swap Cressida on 350Z wheels. Super simple and clean build with a whole lotta power.

Chris’s Triumph TR7. Funny story with Chris and his placement in our booth. We had just finished setting everyone up and cleaning our cars and we were just about to leave the place when we were told that there was one more guy in our group. None of us knew of anyone extra and we had placed everyone on our list. We agreed to see the car and the first thing we said was “fuck yeah, we’ll take it”. Chris and his triumph are one of his kind – nothing you’d ever really see on the streets and it’s powered by an SR20. Definitely a keeper.

JC’s Corolla. This is also going through a nice change for 2012 and I’m looking forward to see it. It’s gone from simple and conservative to… well… you’ll have to see. :)

Jamie’s S2000 – this thing is beat on the track like no tomorrow. Jamie drives it hard and rightfully so. He had got his wheels powdercoated that day or the day before the show too so they were clean as hell.

Punit’s Integra. I remember this was the year that he did the K24 swap and it took weeks on end to get it done. One problem would come up after another and the show came up super quick. Luckily he got it running and entered. Wait till you guys see what he has in store this year.

Gopesh’s GTI – this is also going through a nice overhaul for this year as well.

Terence Wah’s S2000. Another S2000 that saw the track often and built with function in mind. Also another that is no longer in Terence’s possession. He now has a new toy…

Derrek Poyntz’s recently finished Integra RS. This was finished hours before roll-in and ready to go. All the graffiti on this was done by hand! The Calgary skyline is also on the valve cover.

Terence Ng’s Merc. More plans for this later on as well…

iM Feature: Derrek Poyntz’s 1994 Acura Integra RS

Without a doubt, any single person who has ever had a project car/build knows about the many phases a project can go through. Some will have classic elements that are just timeless, cannot be touched and stay with the car until the wheels fall off, while others are pieces that were questionable from the very start, and are now considered horrible trends that should never ever go back on a car.

Despite the trends however, we can all agree that every single solid, virtually timeless item taken from a car owner’s phase is what makes any project or build so great. Similar to life itself, we each go through our own little phases, learn through our successes and failures, and fair much better and wiser with time. Let that sink in for a bit, and you’ll realize the same thing happens to a project car.

A quick glance at Derrek Poyntz’s Integra, and one will notice a simple, subtle and well built Honda. This of course, did not happen overnight.

Derrek, like many of those with a long time project car/build, went through tons of phases to get his Integra how you see it today. “All Show”, “Low and Slow”, “Street Racer”, “Time Attack” “JDM”, “Stretch and Poke”, etc. are just a few of the phases that this project has seen. Take the best of these phases over the course of 12 years, and you’re simply left with “Derrek Poyntz’s Integra”.

From the “Street Racer” phase, you can consider this Integra’s Turbocharged B18C engine paired with a JDM ITR Tranny. From the “Time Attack” phase, everything and anything to do with suspension and balance are put into perspective with goodies like Tokico Illumina shocks combined with H&R Race Springs, an ASR Sub frame brace, and Spoon Front And Rear strut braces just to name a few.

Going into the “Stretch and Poke” phase, simply put, the 16″ Miro wheels say it all. Derrek takes it a step further providing no information on any offsets and width on them. Top secret stuff.

Evidence from the “All Show” phase can be found with clean modifications like Shaved Door Handles, Badges, Bumpers, Door Moldings and the ever creative hand painted Spoon front lip and valve cover, representing Calgary to the fullest.

Derrek’s full attention to detail and cleanliness can be found in the “JDM” Phase. Boasting a lot of pieces from the JDM Honda Integra Type-R such as the side skirts, door panels complete with switches, rear bench, power folding mirrors, fog lights, cluster, and even down to the floor mats; all the pieces a JDM fiend can think of can be found in this Integra.

With bits and pieces taken from each aspect of this Integra’s “life” to make it what it is today, it’s safe to say that it is most definitely amazing what can happen over time. Through out all the good (and bad) phases Derrek went through with his build, he’s got a project car that every single one of us can really appreciate.

Whether it be in real life or through a project/build, we should never be afraid to learn from our mistakes, and grow from our successes. The outcome is always rewarding. Derrek’s reward of course, is having built one of the most unique Integras that we’ve seen on illmotion.

Just have a look for yourself…
