iM: The Re-Up 2012 (Part 6)

Gonna set this New Year’s Eve off with Part 6 of the Re-Up 2012!!! We hope you guys enjoy whatever festivities you have planned tonight but don’t forget to be safe! Happy New Year’s Eve y’all! Let’s have a look at part 6!

Without a doubt one of the sickest E36 M3s we’ve featured and without one of the dopest E36 M3 rear fitments that you’ll ever come across. How fitting considering this E36 is owned by none other than the boys of Urban Expressions Wheel & Tire (South Calgary). Check it out.

Doing it and doing it well under his own discretion, and not paying attention to those who had their doubts, Michael Alfarela brings the California flavor to Alberta with his 2010 Mazda3. Rocking stanced out custom Tiffany powdercoated MB Battles, seeing Michael’s Mazda3 rolling in action is something you’ll definitely to catch in person. Oh yeah, it’s static too.

Considering the Volkswagen R32 already comes with an impressive package straight out of the box, what more could one do to make VW’s hot hatch even more hot? In TJ’s case, build upon it’s performance. Take another look at TJ’s Volkswagen R32 and you might just get an idea of what 387hp looks like.

Another feature from our Canadian west coast photographer, Taylor Smith, we’d like to re-introduce Gabe and his EF Hatch. Coming harder this year with more performance from under the hood, Gabe’s boosted EF hatch is something we didn’t mind having another look at!

Keeping things on a subtle level is Tate Subia and his 2011 Mitsubishi Ralliart Lancer. While his car is still a work in progress, we can’t deny that Tate’s Ralliart is on the right track, all the whilst maintaining a simply clean state.

iM: The Re-Up 2012 (Part 5)

Now heading into the 5th installment of our Re-Up 2012 series, we can’t stress enough what a great year 2012 has been, and we just can’t wait to see what 2013 has in store! Let’s keep things moving!!!

Something we usually don’t highlight here on illmotion are Sport Utility vehicles and as much as we’d like to, it’s rare that we can stumble across ones that can make us look twice. There are definitely some SUVs however, that stand out and we just have to share with you all, and this one is a Mercedes G500 Wagon owned by Almond!

null
iM Highlight: Almond’s Mercedes-Benz G500

Without a doubt, one of the biggest features we’ve done this year belongs to Philip Tan and his Toyota Corolla AE86 Coupe. The amount of time, effort, patience and passion put into this AE86 is a prime example of what a project car/build can shape up to be if you’re as dedicated as Phil is.

With more love for the Level One family out of Toronto, here’s the homie Dan with his Honda S2000. We had the pleasure of heading out to Toronto this year and meeting with our Level One homies and Dan’s S2000 was hands down one of the lowest S2000s we’ve ever seen. Bags? What bags? Static was the only way this S2000 rolled.

With everything and anything that’s MR2 under his belt, Ryan Dandurand surprised us with a new platform this year, a BMW 1M Coupe. With the 1M Coupe being a fairly new release from BMW, it’s amazing how much Ryan has accomplished with his new little project in very little time.

As mentioned from Justin & B’s write up from their highlight, this excerpt PERFECTLY describes their TSXs. ‘With the TSX being your typical mid size sedan that is often overlooked, and somewhat rare to see in the automotive scene, Justin and B have both been able to turn an everyday car into quite the head turner. Take a look for yourself and you’ll see what these twins are all about…’ That’s what’s up.

iM: The Re-Up 2012 (Part 4)

Continuing with the Re-Up 2012 we’re now halfway there as we hit you up with Part 4, showcasing the features and highlights that have graced illmotion.com over the past year. 2012 was definitely another good year for features and highlights as we’ve tried to cover our bases on builds found locally, on the west coast and on the east coast of Canada. 2013 is sure to bring more heat and we can’t wait to get there! But for now let’s continue to take a look back at the year that was 2012!

Another feature from our “Out East” photographer Gawa, is this stunning Lexus GS350 wrapped in matte vinyl, riding low on ADV.1 ADV08TS wheels. With Lexus tuning becoming more and more popular up north, looks like Steve is ahead of the pack.

Sporting JDM CTR goodies and quite the collection of wheels for his daily commuter car, Vince’s Acura CSX will have you snapping your neck and looking twice no matter what set of wheels he’s rocking. Whether he’s rocking his Mugen MF10s, SSR Type-Fs or JDM CTR wheels, Vince is always dressed for the occassion.

They say when life hits you, you have to make some sacrifices and fine tune some aspects of your lifestyle to accomodate for the “real world”. This certainly didn’t stop Danny from building what we think is that perfect balance between “fun” and “family”. Have a look at his 2008 Subaru Impreza WRX STI hatchback and you’ll see exactly what we’re talking about.

2012 marked the return of the “Internet Sensation”. Coming correct this year with fresh, new Moonrock paint, and candy yellow Volk TE37s, Jackie Law and his infamous S2000 made a huge return to the scene, complete with the ceiling missing (That’s a 2 Chainz reference if you guys didn’t catch that). Team Awesome is in the building. What’s up!

Functionality. The term coined for Tim’s 1992 Honda Civic EG Hatch. And rightfully so as this isn’t your typical, basic 1992 EG Hatch. Sporting nothing but the most functional of parts from it’s JDM counterpart, as well as parts from Spoon and Mugen to name a few, Tim’s Supercharged K20 EG exemplifies what it means do things on a subtle level, all the while catching the attention of any diehard Honda fan boy.

iM: The Re-Up 2012 (Part 3)

Moving along smoothly we’re bringing you Part 3 of our Re-Up 2012 series! Looking back at these features definitely brings back some memories and certainly brings that desire for summer to come back ASAP! Let’s have a look at more features and highlights from 2012! Happy Friday everybody!

Kicking things off with one of our closest homies since the beginning, Jason Hoang and his 2011 Subaru Impreza WRX STI. Without a doubt one of the quickest builds we’ve seen this year and all done with great taste in mind. Combining parts from Voltex, Volk Racing and Varis, Jason definitely wasted no time at all on the one he called “Snow White”.

The Calagui Brothers feature was definitely one of our favorite features this year as Allan & Ray came correct with their E90/E92 platforms. Function and Form are definitely evident on both cars further proving the fact that it all runs in the family.

Previously featuring his VR Jetta Coupe, illmotion’s west coast photographer Taylor Smith stepped into the Honda scene with his 1994 Acura Integra GSR. Super clean.

Reppin’ our Level One family once again out of Toronto are Ger & Yau with their Acura CSX. With JDM goodness found on this whip for days on end, this is one daily driver we all wouldn’t mind rocking on the regular.

Keeping things on that Level One tip, our illmotion photographer from the East, Gawa hits us once again with Yau’s R32 GT-R. Fully wrapped in CF Vinyl and sitting on green Volk TEs, Yau definitely knew how set himself apart from your typical RHD R32 GT-R in Canada.

iM: The Re-Up 2012 (Part 2)

Just getting warmed up and coming at you with Part 2 of our Re-Up 2012 series. How fitting considering today is Throwback Thursday and that’s exactly what’s going down as we look back at the features and highlights that have been seen on illmotion this year! But enough with the small talk, leggo!

Attention to detail has been a very crucial part for anyone with a car project/build, and it’s this very key element that Derrek Poyntz executes and executes well. If you want to know what I’m talking about, just check out his engine bay which can be found in our feature below.

“Good things come to those who work their asses off, and never give up” – this quote taken from Rhys Boulanger’s illmotion feature showcasing his 1991 Toyota MR2. Going through several encounters with trial and error on his MR2 build, you definitely gotta give it up to Rhys for continuing to work on this car for as long as he did. The work put into his MR2 definitely did not go unnoticed.

The phrase “Just do you” can definitely motivate someone to do whatever they please, with no regrets. Implementing this phrase definitely gave Scott Hillis the upper hand when it comes to his boosted 2008 Honda Civic Si. With huge inspiration from J’s Racing, don’t be fooled by this Si’s aggressive exterior.

Representing our Level One family out of Toronto is James and his aggressively stanced Honda S2000 sitting on TE37-SLs. iM: The Re-Up 2012 (Part 1)

Well, it’s that time of the year again!

Towards the end of the year here on illmotion we like to take a look back at the features and highlights that we’ve showcased on this site one more time before we move on to another year! Without a doubt, 2012 was another good year for illmotion so it’s only right that we recognize the year that was 2012 with the cars/bikes that have graced this site!

Now, before we begin, we would just like to point out that a few of these cars may not be with the owners as they have moved on to new projects. With “the curse of the illmotion feature” becoming more evident as once an owner’s build gets a feature, the owner gets a new car. As bittersweet as it is, this only brings more builds for 2013, and we can’t wait to get shooting next year!

We hope you are all enjoying the holidays!

Let’s begin with part 1 of the Re-Up 2012!

Without a doubt one of the cleanest Jetta Coupes we’ve seen owned by illmotion’s West Coast Photographer, Taylor Smith.

iM Highlight: Taylor’s VR Coupe

Something that was new for illmotion at the beginning of the year, we featured Steve Plewe’s Numbskull Chopper. As different as this was for us to feature and showcase for you guys, it was definitely a build that we just had to share!

If there was one build that broke the mold of everything that was either “doing it right” or “doing it wrong” it’s Jason Close and his dubbed TRAKRAT, a 2008 supercharged BMW E90 M3.

For 2012, Terence revamped his S2000 in a big way, and this wasn’t going to go unnoticed. Have another look at what he accomplished for this year.

Stay tuned for Part 2…

iM Highlight: Mike’s 1975 Honda CB750

I’m sure by now, everyone is missing the warm summer months. The days where you could go outside, meet up with some homies and chill in a parking lot, and go for a cruise with the windows down. Although some of us still drive our cars in winter mode, I feel for you guys and gals who ride bikes. Putting a bike away for 7-8 months must be very depressing.

null

Mike Salek is one of those people. You’ve probably seen some shots of his Ducati 999R and a few random pics of his black AP2 S2000 on the site before. He’s been an avid supporter of us since we started illmotion, always bringing a bike (or 2) or a vehicle to the car shows here in the city representing us.

null

So its probably gonna hurt him that I’m putting these pics up in the dead of winter. Mike tracked down this rare 1975 Honda CB750 up a few years ago. He needed something different than the sport bikes he’s been riding/collecting and has been working on developing it into its ‘brat’ style that has become more popular in recent years. Its funny because this bike has been very controversial on bike forums because of the choices he’s made building it, but at the end of it, its his bike, his choices/touches, and you cannot deny that it is a complete work of art.

null

It is also of note that this bike was built on a strict budget of $3000. Amazing work considering the price of the bike itself included in that budget.
A long list of customizations and parts include:
-custom front and rear suspension
-custom cut and re-welded frame
-custom made seat pan and seat
-custom made side mount license plate mount
-custom motocross foot pegs
-custom made shorty rear fender
-custom painted black wheels
-shaved swing arm
-Galfer stainless steal brake line
-vintage Firestone tires
-Cycle-X 4 into 1 Super Sidewinder exhaust
-Cycle-X billet upper triple
-Cycle-X clip-ons
-Cycle-X billet tach block off
-Cycle-X clutch
-Dime City Cycle 4″ headlight
-Dime City Cycle tail light
-Dime City Cycle individual filter pods
-Dime City Cycle mini speedometer
-D.I.D gold o-ring chain
-brushed aluminium value cover, forks, motor cases, leavers, and upper triple

We’re almost halfway back to summer guys, just hang in there. And when it does return, be on the lookout for this ‘Spoiled Brat’ running the streets.

iM Highlight: Annie Carbonneau’s Legacy GT

In May 2003, Subaru released the fourth generation Legacy GT. It was always the bigger more luxurious car in the Subaru lineup, but Subaru really stepped it up with this new version. It came with a variant of the 2.5L turbo motor from the North American debut of the WRX STI, and it was the perfect choice for people looking for an AWD Subaru with a decent amount of power, but wanting a little bit more room and luxury as opposed to the WRX and STI.

null

When Annie was looking for a new vehicle as her old Ford Escape was on her way out, she pondered a few options. One thing was for sure, the avid ringette player needed room to carry her gear to and from her games, and also truck around her kids. She also wanted something decent on gas, but with AWD and enough power to have a little bit of fun with.

null
null

She finally settled on a Legacy GT, and eventually found this mint 2006 Satin White Pearl Legacy GT wagon that you see here in BC last winter. It’s previous owner already had a moderate set of mods on including a Cobb AccessPort with which the car was given a healthy torque and power boost, along with a set of KW V2 coilovers, and Cobb front and rear sway bars to help in the handling department.

null

After the winter was over, spring fever hit, and she needed to personalize things a little bit. A few small things were done, like the headlight and taillight/reverse light tint, yellow foglight film, and tinting the windows (all done by Steve at Perfect Dark Tinting). But she was still rolling on the stock Legacy wheels with winter tires. Not wanting to eat up the winter tires, a quick call was made to Bob at UrbanX wheel and tires, and a set of 19″ OZ Superleggaras made its way onto the car, and the ride height was dialed in for the perfect balance of comfort and aggressiveness.

null
null

There may be a few more little things added to this car, but as it stands, she just wants to enjoy it. After all, thats what this scene is all about, and hopefully it continues that way.

iM Highlight: Tate Subia’s 2011 Ralliart Lancer

When Mitsubishi unveiled their latest generation Lancer in 2008, everyone took notice. The car was completely redesigned from the last generation, with a cutting edge design, and new motor options, it was sure to be a hit with the import crowd. And the biggest announcement of all, the new Lancer Evolution would be sold in Canadian dealerships for the first time. Once again, we up here in the North got the shaft, while the Lancer Evo 8 and 9 were sold in the US prior to the Evo 10 (X).

But what about the Lancer Ralliart? The last generation Ralliart was a bit sportier version of the normal Lancer. With bigger wheels, a body kit, and a slightly bigger motor among other extras, it was not as popular to the import tuning crowd as the Civic or Integra platform was, but it was a start nonetheless.

But for this latest generation, Mitsubishi stepped it up. To compete with their main rival Subaru, Mitsu dumped in an AWD system, a variant of the Evo motor and transmission, along with a turbocharger into the new Ralliart, as to keep the playground even with the Subaru STI’s little brother, the WRX.

The Wicked White Ralliart you see here is owned by Tate Subia. It is a good example of a car that is a work in progress with some small details added here and there to help accentuate the look of a car and to separate it from the crowd, while keeping it clean and simple.

As you look at the car, you will notice a few subtle changes, such as red sticker overlays on the Mitsubishi diamond emblems to tie into the red painted brakes, along with the red emblems on the Rally Armor mudflaps. The chrome strip around the grille was painted black to mimic the look of the Evo’s grille, a DIY front lip was added, and the headlights were replaced with Evo style projector units with a set of 4300K HID’s to finish off the front. Yellow foglight bulbs replaced the clear factory ones, and set of OEM window visors are also attached to the car.

The biggest change from a factory Ralliart is the way the car sits on the ground. It is a bit lower and stiffer thanks to the H&R sport springs, and is sitting on a set of Rota Grid (or IKR) sized at an 18 inch diameter, and 8.5 inches wide. It gave the Ralliart an more aggressive look, without really having to really worry about sitting too low to the ground, and also wheel offset issues.

The rear of the car did not go untouched. A carbon fibre RexSpeed lip spoiler were put on the trunk, as was an Ultimate Racing cat-back exhaust. To finish everything off, most of the normal bulbs in the turn signals and brake lights were replaced with LED units.

Tate says this car is always gonna evolve. In fact, since these pictures were taken, a few other things have changed, one of them being a slight tint to the headlights and taillights to give the car a more aggressive look, and yellow tint on the foglight lenses. For now, his the plan is to enjoy this car, and have fun in the winter with the AWD system. But I know for a fact that this car isn’t done. In fact, since I work with him, I will make sure it isn’t. Maybe next year another set of pics will be taken of this car, and it will look nothing like this. 😉

These and more pictures of the car can be found on our Flickr page: HERE

iM Highlight: TJ’s Volkswagen R32

The Volkswagen R32.

Introduced to the North American market in 2004, the R32 came out as the “it car” that every Volkswagen enthusiast wanted to own. Based off the Mark IV Golf platform, the R32 packed a 3.2L VR6 engine, a 6-Speed manual transmission, independent rear suspension and exclusively offered the Haldex based 4motion system. Including all of Volkswagen’s standard “luxury options”, the R32 was more than your average Golf, appealing to consumers who desired style, performance, and functionality.

null

What more could one do to the R32 without sacrificing the already impressive package from the factory? A look at TJ’s Deep Blue Pearl R32 and the answer is obvious: build upon its performance.

Although the R32 already comes with the impressive 3.2L VR6 out of the box, TJ’s main focus is found mainly in the engine and drivetrain, as TJ added a turbo and a Stage 2 tune, putting down 387 horsepower and an amazing 438 torque on all fours wheels, at 19 psi.

As the exterior (and interior) of TJ’s Volkswagen remains true to the R32’s factory styling, TJ sets his R32 apart by combining a set of KW V3 Coilovers and 18″ BBS RC 303s powder coated in white. TJ also added a Neuspeed Rear Sway Bar and Subframe tie bar, a Defcon 2 control arm bushing kit, and a TST rear stress brace to stiffen the chassis and ultimately provide some support to the power that his R32 puts down.

Because the MK IV R32 is a rarity in North America especially in Canada, hearing about what TJ had done to his R32 was something we just had to see to believe. By preserving the R32’s exterior and exterior and building upon the R32’s performance, we can’t help but call TJ’s R32 a true “subtle sleeper”. Just have a look for yourself, and you’ll see exactly what we mean…
